Meet Minkah

And you have to think that with the connection to Alabama, Gase knows what kind of player to expect... A+ pick for me although he wasnt my first choice...

Same here, I was hoping for one of the two top LB, but I said it, if we take Minkah, I without doubt not cry, because the kid is special, and though I wanted LB, this pick will actually make Miami's D better....AWESOME Pick Miami!!!

One of two guys I was hoping to get with this pick. I'm happy.

I predicted a few weeks ago that we'd pass on qbs and will be chanting "Minkah" for years to come..at which point there were 3 responses declaring he would never make it to us. Well it looks like for many of us (but not all) things could not have fallen into place any better than they did tonight!

Most of us don't have warm and fuzzy feelings when it comes to Saban but there's no denying he knows his college players. Here's an assortment of clippings and tweets regarding Fitzpatrick, who the team referred to as "Saban's son." He's been a 5 star winner since high school, a perfectionist and an inspirational hard worker who some say was the best defender in the draft class. I know most of us are conditioned to dislike everything Fins have done, but really, reading this, how could you not be thrilled with this pick??

Nick Saban’s cussing praise of Minkah Fitzpatrick, now a Dolphin, is excellent
Saban on M. Fitzpatrick: "He's phenomenal. He does it every day. I've heard guys say they save it for the game and they aren't worth a ****"

Saban: Minkah Fitzpatrick does it as well as anyone I've ever coached in terms of how he works.
Fitzpatrick is great during practice, per Saban, and that’s not surprising, because he’s really great during games. The former five-star recruit in the class of 2015 emerged for the Tide last year, when he worked some at safety and some at cornerback.

Technically, Fitzpatrick is a strong safety, but he’s really just an elite playmaker all around. Fitzpatrick closes on the ball like he’s Troy Polamalu or some other game-changer of that ilk, and he’s also a lockdown cornerback when he’s pressed into that role. I’d bet that if you polled every FBS defensive coordinator about which player they’d most like to drop into their defense, Fitzpatrick would get a whole lot of votes.

@Charlie_Potter
Saban on Minkah Fitzpatrick: "Minkah has a lot of versatility ... I think his diversity allows us a lot of different things that we can do."

Minkah Fitzpatrick is only Alabama player who regularly makes Nick Saban smile
Minkah Fitzpatrick’s teammates call him “Coach Saban’s son.” The personality test he took upon arriving on campus more closely matched that of the Alabama coach than any other player on the team.
If Nick Saban is the most detail-oriented person in college football, then Fitzpatrick, his junior defensive back, might just be the second most. It’s why Fitzpatrick is the only player on the Crimson Tide whose play routinely puts a smile on the coach’s face.

“He’s the standard of the program,” says junior running back Damien Harris, in an excellent profile of Fitzpatrick by Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated, which you can read here.

Apstein details Fitzpatrick’s journey from his family losing their house in a hurricane, to him helping his father at work, to his annoyance at youth-team teammates for playing in a pool at Disney World the night before a championship game, to being upset on the bench during a Crimson Tide rout.

“He once looked so distraught on the sideline that Harris asked him what was wrong. ‘I missed an assignment,’ he said. “Dude,” Harris said. “We’re up by 40.”

“Fitzpatrick attributes the Tide’s crushing loss in last season’s championship game against Clemson to ‘people coming late to a meeting or just not wearing the right socks.’ He acknowledges that he may sound insane but adds, ‘If you can’t do the small things right, how can you expect to do the big things?’ “

“I just like being around him,” Saban says. “I like the way he goes about his work. It’s fun to see him improve and take on new challenges. He’s just one of those favorite guys.”

Having a Saban-esque mindset on the field during practices and games as well as off the field when players are going about their normal day-to-day activities has proven invaluable for a team, and defense especially, decimated by injuries.

Fitzpatrick has stepped up to play every position in the secondary during his three-year career in Tuscaloosa, molding himself into what Saban calls the “prototype” of what college defensive backs will look like in the future of the sport.

During college football’s awards week, Fitzpatrick won two prestigious defensive honors — the Jim Thorpe and Chuck Bendarik awards — and received a congratulatory call from Harris. His response illustrates how his mind is always on the next step on the path to greatness.

The way the board fell, I have zero issues with this pick. I loved me some Brock Marion in the 90s. His skill set made a lot of things go for those teams.

Now all this talk of a SS playing LB? In the AFC East? Your asking to be rolled up and being spit out.

I hate to even suggest it, because the chances of it happening are so low ... but ... what if we actually move to a true SS/FS scheme and use Fitz as our permanent FS? He has the range and explosion to be special. He has the coverage ability to move around, and if he concentrates on being a ballhawk and last line of defense ... his upside might even be in the realm of Ed Reed ... one of the all-time greats.

Coach on the field, vocal organizer, ballhawk with size, range, tackling and a natural leader in the clubhouse and on the field. Yeah, all of a sudden, our secondary of Reshad, Fitz, X, Tank ... starting to look pretty darn good!

In all my years as a Miami Dolphins fan, I never have been more excited and thrilled about a player, like I am about The Mink Man. I love this pick. He’s super smart, a great tackler, incredibly versitile and a great leader. He’ll be the glue that keeps that secondary together. I can’t remember the last time every draftnik from NFLN, ESPN, NFL.com and others were not only liking the pick, but, raving about it. Fitzpatrick can do it all he’s a chess piece Miami can move all over the defense. He is my favorite player already. Super happy!!! And he’s from New Jersey, not far from where my family lives.

Watching all the post draft coverage on NFL network, not heard a single mention of our pick. Which perhaps says two things, the pick is meh to most naturals and we really aren't relevant in today's game.
