Here is what he had to say about Miami and the rest of the AFC East:

Miami Dolphins: GRADE: C

Cornerback Jason Allen, who was recruited by Nick Saban when he was the coach at LSU, has made a great comeback from a hip injury. I was never totally enamored with WR Derek Hagan, but getting him in the third round isn't a bad pick. Offensive tackle Joe Toledo has a lot of potential but needs some coaching. Defensive tackle Rodrique Wright's stock just seemed to constantly be dropping.

New England Patriots: GRADE: B

Laurence Maroney gives the Patriots a security blanket at running back. Wide receiver Chad Jackson was a nice pick in the second round and could have gone in the middle of the first. Tight end Dave Thomas has excellent hands and Garret Mills might be more of a fullback. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski was a reach in the fourth round (I didn't think any kickers would get drafted). New England had a great first day and a good second second day.

New York Jets: GRADE: B-

I thought the Jets reached late on the first day with linebacker Anthony Schlegel and safety Eric Smith. They did do a good job of building an offensive line with tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold. Running back Leon Washington was a nice second-day pick. Former Missouri QB Brad Smith went on the second day, but I'm not sure where he will fit in. Defensive tackle Titus Adams was a really good pick in the seventh round and I thought he could have gone a bit higher.

Buffalo Bills: GRADE: C

While it was a reach to take safety Donte Whitner with the eighth pick, he is a great prospect and I like him. Giving up a third-round pick to get DT John McCargo in the first round was a reach. He's a solid player but not an elite one. Cornerback Ashton Youboty lasted longer than I thought, but is a very good pick. Safety Ko Simpson and defensive tackle Kyle Williams are solid. Overall, the Bills reached on both of their first-round picks, but drafted players who will help the team.

That's fair, but if you factor in Daunte and Manuel, I think we move to a B+

Before I begin, I just want to say that I really like Mel, and that I don't know why everyone is always dumping on him.

However these draft grades were pathetic. Mel gave every team between a B+ and a C. Esentially he took no position on how any team drafted. Every team got a roughly average grade. Way to go out on a limb there buddy.

I can't believe he gave the Bills anything higher than a C-. As for why people dump on him, before his present job he had nothing to do with football of any kind and sometimes it really shows.

I think judging a draft a day or two after it has occurred is a huge guess at best. In 2-3 years you might have a better idea. What appears to be a reach now might wind up being the steal of the draft upon hindsight... Or...what seems like a solid pick now might wind up looking stupid after we see how they handle the pros...:rolleyes2

Not really. look at it this way. If miami had drafted Tom Brady in the first round it would look like a good move now. but, you could also arguethat they still wasted that pick because they could have taken other quality players and waited until the 5th round and still got there man.

Now i'm not really refering to Whitner he went just a little higher than expected. i'm more refering to McCargo the bills took. if they hadn't made that trade they most likely could have still got him with there next pick and not given up anything.

I hear you....Based on what we assume now then I guess you can make an assessment from that perspective.....for what it's worth. But nonetheless....if McCargo goes to the probowl for the next 5 years then I'll bet you any Bills fan you ask would say it was a smart move to make the trade to get him. Because they KNEW someone right behind them had him targeted...

You know...come to think of it...I'm sarting to sound like Spielman ref the Feeley trade...:sidelol: :sidelol:

First of all Kiper is lying, he had Hagen projected as a possible first rounder and the best receiver in the draft until the Senior Bowl.

Now granted he had a bad week there all in all, but I prefer to look at his career. His uncharacteristic drops could just be due to nerves and pressure, or just not being used to how Cutler etal threw the football, it wasn't like he couldn't get open or anything, which would concerm me more.

As far as Allen goes, I doubt Kiper had a team of doctors check out Allens hip, so he really wouldn't know Allens health status would he?

These grades are meaningless.

Im fine with Mel's assessment of our players. Everyones entitled to their opinion.

The only thing I find silly is that these grades always ignore the fact that we CHOSE to trade our 2nd and 5th round picks for players. Why ignore the players we received with those picks? Its not like we made a bone-headed move such as trading thiose picks to move up and pick Jason Allen in round one. We received actual, real-life, players with those picks. And pretty good ones at that.

Anyway, most writers ignore the players received in trades, not just Mel.

Kiper cracks me up. I'm not sure which is worth less, his pre-draft or post-draft analysis. Ask Kiper who will be Hall of Fame and who will bust this draft. He doesn't know any better than anyone else about anything that really matters. He does have an excellent memory and is a thorough researcher, however.

Dont expect mel to understand how Saban works. Getting a C when we already had C written all over us draft position wise is not a bad thing. Once we get these guys playin, they will see the real deal and how this TEAM is put together. mel will tell you himself, that he doesnt judge on things like character but he grades on injuries, talent, draftability.

Mel would never see eye to eye with Saban in drafting cus Saban is a team builder, not a big name whore-salesmen.

hm...

so didn't BB get an "A" on his draft a few years ago when he drafted Ben Watson at TE and who is 2nd on the depth chart? Now he gets a "B" for drafting 2 TE's? So are they moving one of the TE's on their depth chart to Tackle or maybe he isn't so smart after all?
