SAN DIEGO -- Melvin Gordon's mediocre training camp continued Thursday night in San Diego's 17-7 preseason win over Dallas.
Taking the field with the starters, Gordon had six carries for just 11 yards. Though San Diego punched it in for a touchdown on the opening drive, the Chargers did so via Danny Woodhead as Gordon watched from the sidelines. After Gordon and Woodhead took a seat, second-year back Brandon Oliver shined with 10 carries for 53 yards and a score.
For the heralded rookie out of Wisconsin, the slow start was more of the same: Gordon in camp has not assumed the confident, downhill approach that defined him in college, instead appearing to wait too long for his blocks before being stuffed for small gains.
"I definitely have a lot of work to do," he said afterward. "It definitely wasn't what I expected at all, but we have some more preseason games before the regular season to fine tune myself."
After the Chargers took him off the field, Gordon appeared to ask coaches for more carries.
"I definitely wanted to get back in there," Gordon said, "but like I said I understand there are some guys that they need to evaluate and they need to get on tape to see what they can do, so I understand."
It remains to be seen how much San Diego wants to test its first-round back in the preseason, but Gordon looks like he could use the work.
"They can't block all 11 guys, so it's on me to make that guy miss and make something happen," he said. "So I got to get better there and I will."

He probably had scrubs blocking for him.

naw... he even said that the holes where there for him, and they did their job. he was missing the holes and the looks, leaving yards on the field. he is learning from mistakes!!!
he has been having a poor training camp as well. but we wil lsee in time obviously.

Im still high on Gordon. I dont think he looked that bad in the first preseason game. The blocking didnt look very good at all.

2 WEEKS INTO THE SEASON:

Gordon has rushed for 139 yards, second most among all NFL rookies. He is still developing, showing growth each game dating back to his August preseason debut. On Sunday, that growth meant 16 carries for 88 yards with 73 yards coming on three runs of 27, 26 and 20.

Gordon is the first Charger with at least three 20-yard runs in a game since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2007.

“It felt good,” Gordon told U-T San Diego's Michael Gehlken. “It always feels good to break one. You don’t get many in the League. When you do, you try to make the best of them.”

he looking good, still learning they are saying, and that the offense needs to also focus more on the blocking schemes and improving there more as well. its 11 people not just one, basically coach was saying!!!

just please dont start comparisons of him to LT... im not one to compare, not worth it, but thats jumping a bit far ahead.

and still, Jennings and Stills have been practically invisible...Miller and Gray have nowhere to go (Miller can't find a hole in his bedroom). Gordon here would be walking backwards, bottom line, our Oline is HORRIBLE!!!

LOL... totally agree with our OLine being a complete disaster right now... but not sure why its posted here in a Melvin Gordon update thread... LOL!!!

i guess we are that miserable and depressed over Miami, it just ties into all our thoughts and discussions right now. i couldnt even sleep last night well, it was in my dreams!!!

Todd Gurley has really only played 2 games and I think he's shown why he was in a category of his own in terms of RB's. He's leading the league with 5.7 yards/carry among RB's with at least 50 carries. This is a special talent.

His numbers would look even better had he kept running instead of taking a knee inbounds to seal the win against the Cardinals. He chose a classy move over scoring his first NFL touchdown. Secondly, you have to be extremely in control and aware of what's going on to make that move.

Fred McAfee played for many years in the NFL as a running back. He's a RB's coach and currently the Director of Player Development for the Saints. He works with college RB's that enter the draft in order to help them with their fundamentals and football acumen. He said Todd Gurley and Demarco Murray are the two most intelligent running backs he's ever worked with.

Melvin Gordon averages 3.8 yards/carry and had yet to score a TD. But at least he's healthy. There's a Melvin Gordon update.

I haven't brought Todd Gurley into this yet, was waiting for more games for him, but well said!!! He is breaking tackles, huge runs over 20 yards at a ridiculous pace, and really is coming onto the scene fast. I pray he continues, stays healthy and has one hell of a career!!!

great call with kneeing the ball that game as well, didnt he do that two-three times as well to seal the game??? i could be wrong.... but yes, very classy and for the team!!!

Looks like Gurley so far is the better player...over Melvin Gordon.
