When is the last time a Dolphins linebacker did something like this (tweet below) and actually jumped a route in pass coverage? Our linebackers, for a long time, just seem kind of be there and I think we have lacked pizazz at the position. They also do not seem to be able to cover anyone. TE's especially have tended to eat us up. For example, Trey McBride had 9 catches for 124 yards against us last year. Jordyn Brooks was a pleasant surprise, he is a baller and a good guy to have on the team, but not a difference maker. I do not think the opposition ever needs to gameplan around our linebackers, in fact I think they gameplan to take advantage of our LBs.
Fred Warner, who is a total stud and a difference maker that needs to be gameplanned around, went in the third round in 2018. We drafted Minkah in the first round (good pick in theory but not how it ended), Mike Gesicki in the 2nd round (ahead of Dallas Goedert too), and then Fred Warner went only 3 picks before we took Jerome Baker in the third round. We could have easily moved up to take Warner, Grier seems to trade up in the draft a fair bit, like he did for Eichenberg and Jaylen Wright. I guess we only trade up to make mistakes (although early on Wright to be fair).
Then of course we could have given up less to trade for (and pay) Roquan Smith than we did for Chubb, but Grier got that wrong too.
An under the radar issue, but linebacker has been a continual problem spot for us. Not sure how much of the issue is poor talent evaluation (ergo Channing Tindall), and how much is Grier does not value the position. Our defense in general last year - OK, but not a lot of big plays. Didn't create many turnovers, didn't generate a lot of sacks. Kept us in some games, won us some games, but never really seemed to change the game. Linebacker is part of the problem too.
