BOB RYAN
A shift in brainpower is detected

By Bob Ryan, Globe Columnist | September 14, 2005

I think the gap may be narrowing.

  • The great advantage your New England Patriots have had these past few years was the very simple fact that the coach has been smarter than everybody else. Oh, I really believe that. I don't know how anyone could watch the NFL operate in this century and come to any other conclusion. To borrow a reference someone once made concerning Red Auerbach, Bill Belichick has been playing chess as all the others have been playing checkers.

I now have a feeling we may have allowed a couple of chess-playing foxes into our little henhouse. Worse yet, one of them is in the Patriots' own division

But every once in a while one of them has that certain ''it" that 99 percent of the rest lack. Rick Pitino has had ''it" with every college basketball team he has coached. Bill Belichick clearly has ''it." Charlie Weis is demonstrating already that he has ''it." And I'm willing to go on record as saying that Nick Saban has ''it." I think Patriots fans will soon be very afraid of the Miami Dolphins. A year ago at this time, the Dolphins had one of the most boring, predictable, conventional, and, ultimately, beatable coaches imaginable in Dave Wannstedt. Now they have perhaps The Next Great Thing in charge of their team.

yeeeeee haw Boys and Girls, it has begun !!!!!

Very nice!
It does feel good to read such statements.

Yeah.......Mike and Mike on ESPN Radio in the morning read this over the air...

it was great!!! I did get a lil choked up

they said they they think he is right and that we are no longer a walking mat (people still trowing in little shots on us)

but it was great, they read the whole article on the air.....priceless

That's a huge compliment to Saban considering he has only won one NFL game. Hopefully he is the next NFL mastermind.

My favorite is Belichick on Saban, ''Basically, if anybody doesn't want to work hard or be committed the way he's committed, then they're going to have a problem with him. Now, if they like to work, they won't have any problem at all."

I love it! Let's go Nick, I hope we give Belichick a run for his money!!

I hope it's true, but so far we have one victory. Let's not go completely overboard

I am so happy that we have Nick, you wouldn't believe that 2 weeks ago some Phin fans wanted Wanny back.

Huh? I don't remember reading that or hearing that any Phin fan wanted him back. Who was it?

I hope all this hype will not be dispersed if we lose this Sunday. The Jets want revenge. We can beat them if we keep our heads, but if we let the road get to us... Yeah, all I'm saying don't bring back any of those BS "I Want Wanny Back" threads. Just don't be fairweather. We have a great chance of beating the Jets, just don't be so critical if we lose.

Sweet. If Bob Ryan said that, it definitely commands attention.

a shift in brainpower, patsy fans getting paranoid

This is an article by Bob Ryan. A sportswriteer I despise, but his constant glorification of BBelicheck makes me feel even happier about this article. Different from Jets/Bills viewpoint in that it's from top down ratherr than lateral look at our team.

you will have to free register to read the 2nd page. but it's nice to see acknowledgement from teh boston area.
