Allen likely to hold-out

The Dolphins have signed three of their six draft selections.
But Allen's contract talks, which eventually should lead to a contract with guaranteed money around $8 million, continued its methodical pace.
Indications are that Miami wants Allen to sign a six-year contract, but the player's agent, Mitch Frankel, wants a shorter term.
According to the collective bargaining agreement extended between the NFL and the players' union, the maximum contract length for any player selected up to No. 16 in the first round is six years.
Players would like to sign for shorter terms to become eligible for free agency much earlier.

Here is another article about it.http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...ul27,0,7611833.story?coll=sfla-dolphins-front

I still think that we will have everyone signed by no later than midnight tonight just because of Wayne's presence in the situation. He never gets involved with the football matters, but when he does I'm sure Saban wants to bend over backwards to make Wayne happy.

I really hope Saban can get a deal done quickly......

I'm not sure how to take Mr. H on the holdout issue. Yeah, he was pissed last year when Ronnie wasn't in camp on time and he's been very vocal about that not happening again. But, Wayne is also a business man. So, while on one hand it sounds almost as if he'd do anything just to have the guy in on time, I think on the other hand, he's not going to allow anything stupid to happen financially.

I agree. He's got to be careful what he does and says, or it will guarantee future holdouts or threats of holdouts. If I'm a rookie and I know the owner has a history of overpaying to avoid a holdout, I'm much more stubborn in my negotiation.

Saban's keeping his head about this, which is good. He understands that this conflict is pretty much happening due to the new language in the CBA. Michael Huff signed a 5 year deal...I don't see why Jason Allen should have to sign a 6 year deal, especially when the league has mandated that picks #17 and below are not ALLOWED to sign 6 year deals. I mean, Allen was #16...you gonna tell me we're about to lowball him into a 6 year deal he doesn't want just because he's one spot above the point where the league mandated that 6 year deals aren't allowed?

You don't think it's fair about the 6 year deal? I'm thinking it's about the terms and not the money as well.

I think with the way other contracts are going a 5 year deal is fair for the team and the player...

I think it's unfair if the team tries to lowball him into a 6 year deal that he doesn't want. IMO, that practice leads to more problems than quibbling about signing bonus and salary etc. If a player looks at his salary in 2009 and says damn, I could have been making $200k more this year, he's likely to be a little upset. If the player looks at his contract in 2009 and says, damn I should be a free agent next year but instead I still have two more years of low salary and no new bonus....he's likely to be a LOT more upset.

What players have to understand is that if you are on a team that makes it too the playoffs almost every season then that is extra money in there pockets, also if a team makes it too the Super Bowl a few times in those years then thats extra money. Maybe Allen would like to play for Oakland or the 49'ers for a 5 year contract and not make anything extra for those 5 years. And then there is the expensive Ring that they also get if you win it all. I am so sick of the excuses these players make. Heck give me the 8 million dollar signing bonus and you wouldn't have to pay me anything for the next 6 years. Greed, Greed, Greed. I know this guy is going to be good but what if he isn't??????

I hardly think that the salary terms in years five and six are going to be low. They should be adjusted for the fact that, if we decide to keep him, he must be playing very well. They will be big, just not as big as they would have been on the open market. What Allen gets in return is the high numbers built in and the larger signing bonus up front before his talent has been play-tested in the NFL. His agent and the Dolphin's front office factor all of these things in to the structure of the contract, so really its about money again: is there enough money throughout the contract given how Allen is PROJECTED to perform and factoring in any uncertainty about the performance level?

Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, reports the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/22/nfl">Miami Dolphins are still trying to sign first-round pick FS Jason Allen before the start of training camp Saturday, July 29. Indications are that Miami wants Allen to sign a six-year contract, but the player's agent, Mitch Frankel, wants a shorter term.

And what if he's good but Miami isn't? You're not being fair.

Compared with the signing bonus he could collect if he became a safety of Polamalu's or Ed Reed's caliber and he were about to become a free agent?

Let's be reasonable here.

Allen will sign. I think whoever made the point earlier, its ridiculous for us to expect allen to sign for longer than Huff did in Oakland.
