Dolphins | Cameron not feeling pressure to hire an offensive coordinator
Sat, 24 Feb 2007 09:49:31 -0800
Jeff Darlington, of the Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron is not feeling the pressure to hire an offensive coordinator. Cameron says he would be confident holding the roles of head coach and offensive coordinator. ''I think without question,'' Cameron said. ''I don't think there's any magic in naming an offensive coordinator if the guy is not the play-caller. I'm going to call the plays with the help of the offensive (staff), just like I've always done.''

I still think a coach will be hired and given the title "Offensive Coordinator". I highly doubt the staff is 100% complete.

An offensive coordinator typically has other responsibilities other than play calling. He aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during practices and games. By hiring an OC, Cam would get more time to do his HC job.

He's right on the money. Heck, he can make me an offensive coordinator. All I'd have to do is sit in a nice box seat or pace the sidelines next to my fave players and pick up a nice 6 or 7 digit salary.

I'm not sure I like it. Right now Cam doesn't think it will be any problem doing both (OC and HC) but the reality is he has never had all the responsibilities of a head coach in the nFL. How does he know he can do both? I like the idea of him being very involved with the offense, but he needs to find a guy that will do the work during the week to make sure the offensive game plan is everything it needs to be.

I think he is making a mistake. He allready has plenty on his plate familiarizing himself with the team and players.Perhaps he is underestimating the responsibilities of a HC.He has an open checkbook so why not hire an OC that will do his bidding.

Also as a HC he cant very well be in the booth....who is going to throw the red flag ?. So he is limiting himself IMO.I suppose he could have MM in the booth but who wants that ?

What I fear is that Mularkey might become the de facto OC if one isn't hired. Even if he wouldn't be calling the plays, I don't like the idea of him even unofficially "heading up" the offense or having a big voice in creating plays.

ETA: I see I'm pretty much on the same page as CrunchTime on this issue. :)

Will wonders ever cease.

Is there nobody on our staff we can promote?

Lets promote DC to OC. He can sit in the booth, rest his knee, use his keen intelect to call plays down to Quinn, and bring his unqestionably fantastic work ethics to the practices. OOOPS! Hope I didnt stir da pot up.

I wonder if Marty would like to spend some time as OC. Heck, I'd take him as long as Cam was calling the plays.

He said he knows offensive play-calling better than the assistants who do it full-time.

"It's ultimately going to come out of my mouth to the quarterback," Cameron said. "But I'll get great input from our entire staff."

Now this makes sense..

anyone know what the SD defense ranked last yaer? offense was 3rd our defense was 5th. put our offense in the lower teens and we have a contendor with a top 5 defense.
