sounds like it is either or

The list of finalists is still fluid - with the results of this weekend's divisional playoff games playing a big factor - but former St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz has been told he will not be brought back for a second interview. And Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin is not a finalist at the moment, but could be added depending on the outcome of this weekend's games.

thank god Martz is not a finalist. I'll admit I take the high road with most of the moves the franchise makes, but there is no way I'd say anything positive if he became our coach.

I think we are looking more towards Cameron and Schottenheimer. We wouldn't sign Capers to a much bigger deal if we were going to just bring in Tomlin and change the defense Capers put together.

read it again

if the Chargers win Cameron is out

I meant in general terms. I don't feel Tomlin would be brought in simply because he's a defensive minded coach. We just signed Capers to a larger deal because we were happy with the defense he ran. If Tomlin was brought in, he may want to convert to a Cover 2.

Sigh.

Dom Capers didn't put this defense together. This was Nick Saban's defense. Once again, Dom Capers has always been a straight up 3-4 coach. He has never run a hybrid scheme like the one Nick had him call this past year.

This is another one of those things that will keep being said and said and said and said, and it doesn't seem like it is ever going to sink in.

sorry , gotcha

I was pulling for Schotty, but I should be pulling for the best candidate

so I will have to cheer for the Patriots

Well, I stand corrected.

I just feel that Tomlin would change the defense that is already known by the players and staff. If that is worded any better lol.

Yeah we would be so ****ed if Martz were hired.

I agree on the hybrid thing..with that being said..do you think the def will be better running a "pure" 3-4 with Capers?

don't you love how everybody claims we're a 3-4, when we never once even ran a 3-4 scheme? We'd line up either JT or DBo as a LB at times, but never together. We had/have a unique defense, but not a 3-4.

He ran it, he called the plays for it and had success with it did he not?

He's been a very well respected DC in this league.
That paired with the fact that he ran the hybrid 3-4 D of Nick Saban's adds up to more stability on our D compared to bringing in someone with a mind for different schemes altogether.

You're point is well taken but you've nit picked this whole thing way too much IMO.
There's no telling whether he'll continue to run that hybrid version either as opposed to a straight up 3-4.

Yes, we didn't run a straight 3-4.
We were and are in transition because we didn't have the personnel to go to a full time 3-4. Capers was able to build game creative game plans using the personnel we had. I guess the big question is whether he'll continue to use that approach or whether he'll just force the issue of a full time 3-4.

I'm assuming the Phins talked with him about continuing down the road were on and because of that I think it was good to retain Capers IMO.

I just find it hard to think that if Cam Cameron is one of our BEST candidates, that we wouldn't wait him out if he's the guy we really want. Are you kidding me? I mean, if he's that good, you wait so you can do interview # 2 and then proceed. Another week to three more shouldn't keep you from your ideal head coach if WH likes him that much.

Why on earth would anyone be so impatient as to eliminate a potential coach just because his season is still going on?

:boohoo:

I feel that it is a great move making Capers the highest paid DC in the NFL. The defense as a whole played pretty good.

However, the secondary... Nick Saban's so called "specialty" was terrible two yrs in a row.

What I like about our new structure is that everyone will work together to gain the ultimate goal: the superbowl. When you have a dictatorship and the dictator isn't a good coach, ur not going to have the results that you want.

:boohoo:

Because you are gambling that if he turns you down after his team either wins it all or gets eliminated, that there will be anyone left still worthy of being your head coach.

I'm willing to wait to see who becomes available after tomorrow's games but not the week after.
