Merged: CFL team may drug test Ricky Williams

Im from the Toronto area and the argos organization work hard to reach out to the community and pinball clemons has put up a very good image for the organization because him and his players are very active in the community and they dont want people to think they are promoting a drug attic. By testing him they can show show hes not a drug attic.

Interesting article about Ricky and the possibility of coming to the cfl. Explain to me how testing a guy when there is no drug policy in the league makes sense? Don't think you can pick and choose who you want to test. Maybe it's just me....

If they put a clause in his contract and he agreed to it, then they could drug test him.

anyone, at any time, is subject to drug testing, or drug screens.. its a part of life..as a person who has been tested repeatbly since failing one 2 years ago, i am never surprised when the politics enter the picture, and impose its governing will its minions. .... everyone cries for drugs (namely herb) to be legalize ( decriminalized, i guess), but what they dont understand is that, \ if it is legalized, that will not have any bearing on employee testing, it will only become a stronger "community/ care" type of advertisement for employers to flaunt to the public...sorry for the run-ons, i have strong opinions, on this topic, as well as other privacy infringemnt goings on.

This is the most interesting part of the article to me:

Pelley said both Williams and Steinberg ''thoroughly understand and appreciate'' their requirement that Williams not only stay clean, but also promote a drug-free lifestyle to Toronto youth. The team has made conscious efforts in recent years to highlight their players as community role models, Pelley said.

''It is absolutely crucial that before we would proceed with Ricky Williams that he is prepared to be absolutely clean and more importantly, educate the youth of Toronto to say no to drugs,'' Pelley said. ''If he's not prepared to do that, we would not sign him, even if he was prepared to play for free.''

Even if Ricky is prepared to say no to drugs himself.......I just don't feel that this is something that he will buy into. It's not like he is all of a sudden 'anti-drugs'.....just that he has decided that they are not for him. Maybe he is....and maybe he wouldn't mind taking this stance with kids........but IMO, he probably still doesn't think that drugs (like marijuana) are evil and may have a problem denouncing them to kids.

I really dont think it matters. If ricky plans to come back to the NFL after this year then hes going to get tested all year anyway. If he dont then hes not able to return to the NFL next season.

He's still going to be getting tested all the time by the NFL because he's still in the drug program.

Interesting, we call them drug 'addicts' here in the USA. I sure hope ricky is what he says he is, and not an "attic".:sidelol:

"Attic" isn't that where Norman hid his mother?

That makes no sense that they want Ricky educate the youth about being drug free, I understand if they drug test him, but in the end you know all they care about is the publicity and money it would bring to the Argos if he played IMO

It's not the best way to start a relationship with a player - by treating him differently than the other players from the onset. Singling out one player - prior history or not - does not create much good will between the player and the team. It's as if they assume he'll fail and they give him just enough of an opportunity to do so.

I think Ricky should pass on the CFL - other than making some money, he doesn't stand to gain much.

I wonder if ricky's mom is in the "attic." darn drug attics, taking up all the space in my house. will the argos test my attic for drugs?

Because he isnt retireing, he is still under contract with The Miami Dolphins and part of the NFl, therefore he must undergo the NFL drug testing policy for the rest of his career in the league

EDIT - My fault I thought this was about the NFL testing him

I guess they can test them like any employee can test a worker

AKA Toronto is wastng money.

I have to think they'd partner up with the NFL on it. I think this is a wise move on two fronts: it makes the organization look better than if they just take a "druggie" and it helps them in their effort to sell this to the Dolphins because it makes them seem like they want what's best for Ricky long term just like Miami does.
