Austin Howard - T - Jets

The Miami Herald expects the Dolphins to "focus" on free agent RT Austin Howard after locking up Branden Albert on Tuesday.

The Albert-to-Dolphins marriage is already considered a done deal. The Fins need more than one offensive lineman, however, and are expected to pursue Howard as well as free agent Zach Strief, who started at right tackle in New Orleans 2011-2013. Strief is a better pass blocker. Howard is a mauling run blocker.

Scouting report I found:

“Displays good movement skills, effective on the second level, and can hit a moving target. Plays with a large degree of quickness. He's a solid position blocker and easily controls opponents once engaged the point of attack, makes solid use of angles and body positioning.

His inexperience does leave something to be desired with his technique.

He gets lazy with his hands at times and does not stick them into defenders. Does not finish blocks and tends to fall off defenders. Must improve his overall body strength.”

I like Strief for all he brings to the table, but this works for me. of course the Jets are also minted with cap space

I like it, kick the tires on him. Getting a solid Left and right tackle along with a guard in free agency is a home run.

that would be a disaster for us, I am hoping these reports spur us to sign him before tomorrow. They are negotiating as we speak.

Id be happy if we got him, we need a solid run blocker to lock down the right side. Not to mention he has the quickness to fit our blocking scheme.

You could quote those weaknesses and say he's also 4'10" and that would still sound better than what we worked with last year.

It would not only get Miami help on the line, but it'd hurt a divisional rival. Can't say I'd mind that. Sorry Junc!

Driving the price up for the jets...

Santanio Holmes was cut, methinks this will hurt our pursuit

that doesn't really play a role, they knew a while ago they were cutting him so that was factored in and even if he wasn't cut they had plenty of cap room to get Howard signed.
