I ask this because I have been scratching my brain trying to remember when a QB that was 6 foot or under actually led a team to a title.

The problems of a short quarterback seeing the throwing lanes and being able to see the field in general over the taller than ever D-lines of todays NFL cannot be discarded, not to mention having passes batted down, something NFL D-lineman have gotten really proficient at.

Unless I'm mistaken you would have to go all the way back to Bob Griese to find a QB of Brees similar stature that actually won the big game.

In all this Dree Brees mania on this board, not even getting into the shoulder injury or the fact that Gus Frerotte completed twice as many passes last year of 40+ versus Drew Brees, the height of Drew Brees is something that really bothers me......does it bother anybody else?

Yup as does arm strength and personally i've always looked at brees footwork in the pocket thinking "what the hell is he doing riverdance?" however its so rare to get a shot at a very good qb in the prime of his career without draft pick compensation and there is no doubt he massively upgrades a key position on this team

I kind of agree with you in a way. If he can play the way he did 2 seasons ago, i wouldnt care if he was 5'9. It is nice to have the prototypical 6'4/6'5 qb, but if he heals good, his play makes up for his height, one thing i like about brees is that he is great at making safeties bite by looking off receivers and is a smart qb, imo he will be the best free agent qb out there if he gets released, im all for him

His injury IMO is no real cause for concern. He doesnt have great height, but when you can play, you can play.

I doesn't bother me at all. As canuckfinfreak said, " It's nice to have the prototypical 6'4/6'5 qb" but Drew Brees has been a Pro Bowl calibur qb the past two years. Even Dan Marino who at 6'4" had passes batted down.

So it doesn't bother you that historically no quarterback of his limited height has won a championship in over 30 years?

I fully realize he can play, Doug Flutie could play, Doug Flutie also didn't win a championship, nor was he ever a serious threat to win one.

BlueFin,
I fully agree with you! His height was big question when he got drafted. His play of the past two years has been good, but now he has that injury. However that little shtt head Flutie did well, and I think he is only 3'8. If Brees is healthy, I would take him over Culpepper. IMO

Legit concern, although I definitely think he'd be an upgrade over what we have now.

On a related subject, Len P. of ESPN on 790 is saying people close to Brees are telling him Brees won't even be able to throw until July.

When I saw the title of the thread Bob Griese came to mind but I see someone already has beaten me to it.

Its true that Brees doesnt have the measurables of a prototypical all pro QB but he does have all of the intangibles.

He is intelligent and has great leadership qualities .Like Griese
he cant carry a team on his back but he can lead it to the playoffs and win a SBfor you.

As far as the batting down of balls there are many tall QBs that get their throws batted down because they have a low trajectory on their throws or because they dont have much ability to find the lanes between DL.AJ Feeley for example.

He's already proven that his height doesn't impede him from being a solid starter so why would it bother me?

Jay Fiedler at one time was considered a solid starter by many many Dolphin fans(not me).

Isn't there a difference between being able to beat bad teams and being able to succeed in the playoffs and Superbowl?

What your saying to me is that you believe Brees can be the first (QB, 6 foot or under) since Bob Griese in 1974 to lead a team to a Superbowl victory.

Why haven't more short QB's won Superbowls?

No it doesn't bother me.

Does it bother you that no team wearing a WHITE helmet has won the SB in over 30 years???? The Patriots and Bucs won only after changing their helmet color. Same sort of meaningless historical trend.

Fact is that most QB's in the NFL are over this height and simple law of averages would tell you that they have a lower chance of winning a SB vs. taller QB's simply because there are less of them.

A QB named Manning has never won the big game either.............but foolishly, I'd take one of them as well.

Listen, I know that I'm getting off point here......but I just don't like the 'historical' referrence.....I'm mean someone could try and use that as a reason not to want a black QB as well......which would stupid, so I don't want to turn around and use it on a 'vertically challenged' QB.

The main reason that his height doesn't bother me, and probably shouldn't bother anyone else, is that he has proven that he can be a very successful QB in this league, even if he is a hobbit.

Did he get shorter since playing in San Diego?
