The Nick Saban era is over in Miami. The Dolphins are probably in worse shape now than when he arrived. The root of their personnel problems starts at quarterback, but new head coach Cam Cameron is inheriting a roster that has plenty of holes. Defensive player of the year Jason Taylor is a superstar and the defense has potential with some additional help, but Miami's passing game is very worrisome, as is its offensive line. Cameron is going to have his hands full in his first year. Key additions

On offense, Miami brought in David Martin, Cory Schlesinger, Chris Liwienski and Az-Zahir Hakim as somewhat prominent additions. Hakim could be Miami's new slot receiver, but he hasn't been very productive of late. Schlesinger is declining and has taken quite a pounding over his career, but should provide an effective lead blocker for Ronnie Brown. Liwienski is a backup, but could potentially crack the starting lineup due to the lack of depth and talent along Miami's offensive line. Martin is a very good pass-catching tight end, but offers little as a blocker. This group is less than impressive overall as an addition to the Dolphins' struggling offense. Jay Feely will replace Olindo Mare as the Dolphins' kicker. This is a nice upgrade. The big splash made by Miami this offseason was the signing of Joey Porter. The Dolphins overpaid for his services and he is declining as a pass-rusher, but this is a good fit for both team and player. Porter should take some pressure off Taylor. Miami also re-signed Keith Traylor, who provides bulk and power in the middle of the defense, but he cannot be counted on for the long haul.

Its hard to disagree with anything said here. I like the fact that Cam has an offensive mind. I love defense but our head coach has had a defensive mind since Shula left( for the past 11 seasons) and we all know where that has gotten us, great defense but no playoffs.

We have spent only 1 first day draft pick on a QB since Dan Marino in 83
No first day picks on QB in the past 20 years!!! No wonder we have QB issues.

IF Cam spends all of our first day picks on offense, or finds a way to move up in order to draft QUinn that will be fine with me,

I don't think Quinn is worth moving up. He misses wide open guys that makes scouts just shake their heads in confusion. I get the feeling he will be the next Rick Mirer

Again I really can't see how anyone could possibly say the Dolphins are in worse shape than they were after the 2004 fiasco.

Front to back, from organization to personnel the Dolphins are in a whole lot better shape than after the 2004 season.

It looks like we are a year late to be drafting a 1st round QB. I'm not too sure about Brady Quinn ... even if he dropped to #9. JaMarcus will be long gone before #9.

Last year, however, we had a good chance of landing either Jay Cutler or Matt Leinart. The draft year we could use a franchise 1st round QB, we have only 1, maybe 2 good ones available. Kind of aggravating just thinking about it. Landing another Dan Marino like in the 1983 draft is probably just sheer luck ... either that or you have to move up and mortgage the team for the next 3-4 years to get one.

Man, I hope Daunte or somebody can get our QB situation resolved. 6-7 years of relative QB poverty compared to teams like the Patriots is really getting to me. Us Dolphins fans have gotten used to having quality QBs. :(

No question....

Absolutely correct. 2004 was probably the low point of the history of the organization. No way we're in worse shape now.

Based on our offseason fiasco, the Dolphins media guys are hyping up the minicamp this weekend as: "come watch Cam's mind at work' which is about the only thing they can say because our team because has been gutted. Local newspapers point out that our offseason has been reviewed as: overpaying for Porter, Schlesinger's too old, Liewinski can't pass block, Hakim is totally shot, Martin is always hurt, Feely's a tradeoff, and our quareterback situation is a joke. So forget about the blah nature of our current situation, forget about the fact that Cam worked his magic with great personnel in San Diego, let's watch Cam "coach" and enjoy the ride. Yeah babeeeee!

I think Nick Saban gave the organization an overhaul, a vision and some much-needed confidence. I think his drafts were twice as good as what we were generally seeing under Wannstedt, and we're still feeling benefits from them (Roth, Crowder, Brown, Daniels, Toledo, Alabi...all are #1 on the depth chart right now heading into the 2007 draft).

The worst things Saban did were **** up the quarterback situation by ending up wrong on the Culpepper/Brees question, and then leave the organization without seeing his work done. But that doesn't mean that we're in worse shape than 2004.

I remember the days when I actually cared what the "experts" said.

Now, however gradually, I realize that THEY DON'T KNOW DI**.

Amen..What the hell are they talking about. If we can get good Qb play, and a little consistency from the online, along with Ted Gin in the draft. We can compete with anyone..

in football (According to the press) the only position that matters is quarterback. so if tom brady is on the raiders they win superbowls... :-/

I think that the Saban drafts were better than some people want to give him credit for. With Jason Allen hopefully stepping up this year and making an impact (Toledo, Fred Evans, Alabi, Rodrique Wright, too) maybe that will change.

It's hard to fault Saban or the organization re: Culpepper/Brees. Brees trashed his shoulder- in hindsight it worked out for him and the the Saints, but we all know what kind of gamble that seemed like at the time. Saban drafted well- we can at least give him that, especially as compared to Wannestedt and his almost worthless drafts.
