I found this interesting article that may revamp how the NFL playoff seedings would work.

February 2, 2008 -- PHOENIX - The GiantsNew York Giants ' wild-card run to Super Bowl XLII would have looked different under a plan being studied by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Speaking here in his annual state-of-the-league address, Goodell revealed a potential shakeup to the existing playoff system that would allow wild-card teams the possibility of a home game.

Well there already is the possibility. If the Redskins would have won the first two rounds in the playoffs, then the Giants would have hosted them in the NFC Championship.

TRUE......if two wild card teams meet in the playoffs, the team with the better record would be the host....in this case, the Giants had a better record than the Redskins and would have hosted them had they played. The difference with Goddell's proposal is that a Wild Card could have the home field advantage over a division winner:

If the plan had been in place this year, the wild-card Giants (10-6) would have hosted NFC South winner Tampa Bay (9-7) and the wild-card Jaguars (11-5) would have hosted the AFC North champion Steelers (10-6) in the first round. Ironically, in light of Goodell's plan, the road team ended up winning both of those games.

that is crap

only thing i want changed in NFL is OT...

PS sorry for crappy reply i am wasted

if they want to do that then the NFL shold should get rid of divisions and just have the AFC and NFC and the top 6 teams in each conference go to the playoffs.

note to the wild card winners, win your division.

Dont like it, the differnce in one game could be because of a bad division vs. a good division

I like it a lot....

every year there is a ****ty division like the NFC South or the NFC West who gets a gimme home game for being the best of the worst.

Giants 10-6 coming out of the ultra-competitive NFC east is 100x more impressive winning the south by default.

id love to see this change. i think its stupid that a team in a terrible division gets to host a homegame just for winning the division even if theres a wildcard team with a better record. if a wildcard team has a better record they should get the home game. it only makes sense. it puts the emphasis on winning EVERY game... not just enough to win your division.

heres another article about it...

off topic, but i think the NHL should do the same thing, i think its ridiculous that the division winners get the top seeds, even when theres a team with a better record, from another division that ends up with a terrible pairing due to the seeding system.

if you win your division you should be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, and thats it! the seeding should be based on wins in the NFL's case, or points in the case of the NHL. I think the same can be said for baseball too. nevermind this "free pass home game" for a division winner that doesnt have the best record

Goodell Considers Minor Playoff Format Change

This is a great idea IMO.

Roger Goodell wants to make it so that in the first round of the playoffs, division winners wouldn't automatically have a home game. If they played a wildcard team that had a better record, the wild card team would get the game in their own crib.

The idea is that it gives teams more incentive to play hard throughout the end of the regular season, so we don't end up seeing something like a Charlie Batch vs. Jim Sorgi matchup in Week 17.

I love this. I have been complaining about this for years. I never understood why a team is rewarded for being in a weak division, while a team that has played better throughout the season is punished for being in a difficult decision.

I don't like the proposed change. To me it defeats the purpose of having a division title. That title should mean something. If you don't even get home field advantage in the wildcard spot its worthless.

sounds interesting. i wouldn't mind the change, but if this happens, whats the point of having divisions. get rid of them and just have two conferences like ganooch had mentioned.

The only change I want to see in the NFL is get that stinking ref out of the defense. I don't care if you put 43 refs behind the offense get the back judge out of the defense...
