Honestly, I know he had a setback but god, you dont cut young players who have proven they can play and have alot of potential. I will have to trust that Saban figures the setback is so bad that he will need serious time off, meaning we couldnt keep him on the 53 man roster. But I really hoped that Poole would bounce back off the injury and compete for the nickel spot and then eventually challenge Will Allen for a starting spot. Now we are weak at depth at CB, Goodman is our nickel and who knows who will be 4th. I assume the injury must be worse than reported, because if he was going to be back at some point this season, I would have not released him. With all the no name undrafted free agents and journeymen at the back end of our roster, we cut a guy who showed starting potential and is going into only his third year. I heard we may re-sign him, but even if we do I now feel like maybe the staff doesnt think much of him to just waive him and make him available to the enitre NFL. I wouldnt be suprised if he was claimed. If I was looking for depth at CB, and I saw Poole, I would sign him even if he was on the PUP list in the begining of the season and missed the first 6 weeks, or however long it took. All off-season I have expected him to be an intracle part of our revamped secondary, but I guess not.

Yeah I agree with you, but as you say it is shocking. Perhaps they will resign him later in the year after he recovers as... we can only hope for the best for him.

In Nick i trust.I hate he is gone too,but if we needed him he would still be here.He is very injury prone. It seems like the knee will never heal.

I have to believe that Poole's knee injury is much more serious than any of us have any knowledge of. If Poole was healthy, I think he had a great shot of cracking the starting line up. Maybe we will Poole him back further down the line. All in all, I agree with you. When I first got on Finheaven this morning, I certainly wasn't expecting to see that as the front page news.

I can see why we cut him, how can't you?

1. he has proved nothing, sure he could play before he hurt himself, he has proved absolutly nothing since his injury before last preason, the guy hasn't played football in 15 monthes!

2. Why cut a guy who can practice?? Poole clearly can't and the chance of someone signing him are i believe little, it was a gamble Saban was willing to take, if he clears waivers and shows he can recover from this nagging knee he'll be back on the team.

3. He's never played football under Saban, he's never been on the field to learn Saban's D, he only knows what he's seen on film. He's never worked with any of the starting players in secondary and very few of the backups, its like he's a rookie again.

4. A catastrophic knee injury to a CB is far differ from most positions on the field, he may never recover and be the same as far as speed and agility.

to sum it up, i liked what i saw from Poole and he really does have enormous potential if he can get healthy but fact of the matter he hasnt been able too so I believe it was the right move. hope the guy can come back though.

woah..this sucks. But yea, Saban is the DB SPECIALIST. He's definately running one hell of a program, so I'll leave it at that. Poole's injury was probably pretty bad if we're just waiving him. If we did it, other NFL teams should have their own look at him and decide they wont' keep him either. Shocking? Yes, definately...But saban's got the master plan.

wasted 3rd round pick... if we're going to give up that quickly we should just get value for our picks and trade next years 3rd for Lelie so we can stop talking about who our #3 wr will be

It was three set backs, and he has barely proven anything except he can't stay on the field. I felt another injury coming this year and can't figure out why everyone is so high on him.

From what I've read, "what he's seen on film" didn't translate to learning the defense. He's had a year to study and learn the defense, but yet can't "really" learn it until he's on the field?

Sounded to me like he was lost out there, which is unacceptable for somebody who's been in the system for a year. I think that's why he's gone.

I think this was Nicks worst move imo.The team already has a weak secondary as it is right now.Yea he is comming off a knee injury but atleast let him prove his worth.

I was shocked as well but I have to believe Nick knows more about the situation than me (or any of us on this board). From what I gather Will wasn't really picking up the Defense well. Maybe Nick didn't see him as a good fit for our style of D, or maybe he is a gambler hoping he'll clear waivers and then resign for a much cheaper contract. With less money you can let the guy sit until completely healthy and give him another season to learn. All I'm saying is that I trust Nick more on this move (even though it surprised me) than I trust myself.

In response to a few posts,

-Poole was a 4th round pick not a 3rd.

-And if we re-sign him, according to my calculations, because of the veteran minimum being 530,000, we would save very little by the change in his new contract.

- I didnt see the other post, I was not aware this news was available for some time and I would not have started a new thread if I knew otherwise.

- I am "high" on him because I saw alot of potential in 2004, and it sucks that it looks as if that will be unrealized.

Doing this now allows him to clear waivers and go onto the practice squad. That is IF his injury will allow him to be productive.
