Jets Facing Salary Cap Decisions for 2006
Wed Dec 14, 2005

The New York Daily News reports Jets salary cap guru Mike Tannenbaum will have plenty of numbers to crunch this offseason. The Jets have about $120 million committed to the 2006 cap, which is projected between $92.5 million and $95 million. Players likely to be released before March ('06 cap savings): CB Ty Law ($7.6 million) and QB Jay Fiedler ($6.1million). On the bubble: ORT Jason Fabini ($3.2 million), C Pete Kendall ($3.1million) and FB Jerald Sowell ($600,000). Players with high cap numbers who could be asked to take pay cuts or be released ('06 cap savings if the latter): OLB Eric Barton ($2.4 million), RB Curtis Martin ($2.4 million) and C Kevin Mawae ($1.1 million). Players with bloated cap numbers who probably will be asked to renegotiate: WR Laveranues Coles ($10 million), DE Shaun Ellis ($8.1 million), QB Chad Pennington ($15 million) and DT Dewayne Robertson ($9.4 million). WR Wayne Chrebet, expected to retire, will save the team $1.3 million after June 1.

Very good news for Fins..Reported Jets not high on Matt Leinart ...ESPN

It's still very early in the evaluation process but the New York Jets, or at least some members of the coaching staff, are anything but head-over-heels on Southern Cal star quarterback Matt Leinart. Like some other staffs, the Jets have concerns over Leinart's perceived lack of arm strength and limited movement. It would be interesting to see, if Leinart dropped to the Jets' slot in the first round, what New York officials would do. The Jets certainly need to cover themselves in the event Chad Pennington is not ready for the start of the season, following two rotator cuff surgeries in a 10-month span, but the coaches feel Leinart would be a high-priced gamble. New York will likely fill its need at quarterback in free agency.

I think signing Pennington to that megadeal a year or so back is what keeps them from considering Leinart. They cant afford both. That deal with Pennington set them back years, hes not worth the kind of money they gave him and he cant stay healthy.

that is why they will not pick lienhart and may have to trade the pick because they cant afford the second pick in the draft

I'm looking forward to seeing the Jets in the AFC East cellar for many years to come. It couldn't have happened to a better team if you ask me.....

J-E-T-S......SUCK!! SUCK!! SUCK!!

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Well Pennington wont be making 15 mill next year...so that will help them out a bunch.

 I cant believe how much money they gave Fiedler

pennington said he was not willing to restructure his deal if they bring in a QB

Why is that good news for Dolphin fans?

Yes, that's what I was wondering as well. We wouldn't be in a spot to get Matt and that Jets think he blows. Neither one is good for us. Actually, it's bad if the Jets don't get a weak armed QB.

IRRELEVENT, He won't be there at 15+

The silver lining would be the JETS putting faith in CHAD's recovery again next year ... and sticking with him and JAY ... that would be good news ...

Sweet bring back Jay ! Kidding... Maybe one of the OL though...

i remember hearing on espn radio one sunday...the cant afford to cut pennington because of the salary cap hit and they cant afford to draft a qb early, because of all the dead money they already have in that position...
