Why do we want to trade arguably our best defensive player--Patrick Surtain? He is only 29; he can play any position in the defensive backfield. I know the salary situation is a big problem, but sign him for a year, and then evaluate his and the rest of the defensive backfield's play next year. Maybe he and Saban, a defensive backfield expert, will hit it off, and Surtain will be resigned to a cap-friendly deal next year.
You have to weigh the probability that (at best) a second round pick will be as fruitful as maintaining Surtain against the probability that we wouldn't be able to afford him in the long term.
