Monumental Difference Exhibited in a Single Play
The start contrast between the Wanny/Bates/JJ defenses and Nick Saban's was summed up that last play from scrimmage.
The Dolphins are about to send a house blitz on third down in the red zone. Seau and Co get right up on the LOS and even jump into the neutral zone.
Immediately, Brian Griese calls an audible. But so does Seau and Co. They all backup. And at the snap of the ball, they stay back.
Jason Taylor, standing up on the left side, blows by TE Becht and LT Davis unmolested, stripping and sacking Griese. Turnover Dolphins.
In the Wanny era, our defenders would have backed up a bit. Maybe even yelled at each other about how knows what. But you can bet that the same guys would be blitzing. The Bucs would have adjusted and we wouldn't have.
My question is, was the quick jump by the Seau and the other blitzers by design?? Or is this defense just that versatile?? Surely the latter. But the former wouldn't even suprise me.
And as I'm typing all this up, I'm witnessing more of the joy that is Nick Saban's defense. The movement. The deception. Lots of guys creeping towards the line, but never knowing who's actually coming.
I mean, we're facing the Bucs tonight, a team I've watched the last five seasons. And this defense is far more sophisticated than Monte Kiffin's. The Bucs defense is physical and aggressive. Our defense is physical, aggressive, dynamic and deceptive. I can't wait until our guys get really comfortable with it.......and Saban gets the players he wants.
