Interesting Quote from Mr. Saban!

Saban said the Dolphins will not tackle during camp, a practice he adopted as an assistant with the Oilers in 1988. "There's no question about the best way to be a good tackling team is to tackle," Saban said. "But I think if we tackle in practice, we wouldn't have anybody else to tackle in a game."

On the negative side of this, can the team just flip a switch and become good tacklers when they play a game? Shouldn't training camp help teach alot of the young guys how to tackle?!

On the positive side: He must really teach aggressively attack style defense. I love that he thinks alot of people would get hurt in camp if they tackle! He will wait for the games and then UNLEASH THE HOUNDS!!!! With people like Roth, Zach, JT, Schulters and Tebucky, I could see how you could beat yourself up tackling in camp.

In Saban we trust. There is a method to his maddness. All the years with Wanny and Bates our tackling was suspect at best and we would tackle all day long. He really pushes all techniques and positioning. Tackling should just follow suit and there hopefully will be a reduction in injuries.

Players tackle for many years. As outstanding players in college they often forget basic techniques. Stress techniques in practice and hopefully that carries to the field. Maybe this will help our defense play in December, since in the recent past they often seem to forget how to tackle at that time of year.

That's what Saban was talking about in his press conference. He says that even though they don't tackle, they work on getting themselves into the proper position to make the tackle. When you stress the fundamentals like that, you will see them carry over into the games.

Saban's LSU teams were always among the best tackling teams in college football.

Yup. He teaches the technique without damaging the offensive players. They still hit in practice and make contact which is enough. Saban knows what he's doing.

No tackling in camp?!

This is the first I have heard of this. It also concerns me. What the heck are they doing during the middle drill--playing touch?

I posted this earlier with similar thoughts. Saban teaches them the proper technique and how to get into position, but he doesn't have them wrestle each other to the ground. I assume there is contact, but then it stops at that point.

Maybe they'll be like ALOT HUNGRIER for a nice hit when the real games start. They'll get they're feet wet now in preseason.

yeah. We have always tackled and had injuries. Also with all the tackling in the past we still were poor (esp at the end of the year). If the technique and positioning is there the tackling will naturally follow.

They'll tackle enough in the preseason games.

I always worried when the team didn't tackle enough in practice, because it always seemed to carry over to sloppy tackling on the field, but I guess Saban is sticking to his proven system.

One advantage I see is that the guys will be frothing at the mouth to hit somebody by the time the game comes around.

Pitty the Chicago Bears next Monday. Our guys are going to be dying to hit something.

Yeah, imagine someone with a personality like Roth gettting all that aggression pent up because he can't unleash on anyone..........then all at once gets to let it all out on our first opponent. This could get interesting.

Hopefully it ill be a good way to avoid the the late season burnouts we have been accustomed to expect during the last few years.

Especially Bua. Seems like everytime I've read a report from TC it mentions Bua wanting to hit someone badly. Maybe he'll get another great hit in.
