Can Capers rediscover pass rush in Miami?

It will be interesting to see just how much the hiring of Dom Capers, the latest addition to Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban's all-star staff of assistants, means to the expansion of the 3-4 defense in South Florida in 2006 and also to the career of Jason Taylor. In his first season playing a hybrid end/linebacker position in 2005, the nine-year veteran Taylor collected 12 sacks and earned his fourth Pro Bowl berth, although an injury will keep him out of the league's all-star game on Feb. 12. Will the hiring of Capers be a real boost for Taylor, even though he will be 32 by the start of next season?

Maybe.

Although there is little doubt Saban hired the former Houston Texans coach to continue and maybe even enhance the 3-4 initiative begun in 2005, Capers' defenses haven't exactly set the league on fire the last few years, at least in terms of pass-rush results. That's not a criticism of the decision to bring Capers aboard, because he is a proven coach with a fine track record, but rather a statement of fact.

.......

And why is it that Capers was assigned the obtuse title of "special assistant to the head coach" and signed to just a one-year contract? Here's why: Capers had one season remaining on his contract in Houston and, although his scheduled salary for 2006 isn't known precisely, it was likely in the $2.5 million-$3 million range.

Knowing that the Texans would still have to pay the difference between that salary and his salary as defensive coordinator in Miami, the Dolphins wanted to negotiate a deal with just $300,000 in compensation for 2006. Texans officials, though, felt that the Dolphins were leaving them too much liability by signing Capers to such a bargain basement deal for a guy who will be presiding over the defense, and balked at the terms of the offset.

So rather than spend days quibbling, the Dolphins essentially reduced Capers' title to a fairly innocuous one, and signed him to a one-year contract.

Personally, I dont know what he means about pass rush... We were second in the league in sacks this year... unless he is talking about just with the d-line with no blitzes?

So they signed him as a special assistant to save us money and Capers stil gets 2.5 - 3 mil....shrewd deal.

I wouldn't rule out bringing him back next year if the defense performs well.

I believe Len was referring to Dom's defensive capabilities and not Miami's when he said that.

oh... that makes more sense... I was gunna say...

I would have to say Miami has better defensive players than the texans do. which would then inturn help capers and allow him to do just fine. besides capers has had success everywhere he was a defensive coordinator. yeah i think he will do just fine.

So if I have this straight, the Texans are still paying him, but not as much as they would if he hadn't signed with Miami (i.e., what they would have paid him minus what the 'Phins are paying him) but more than they would have if the 'Phins had made him DC?

Given his track record and Miami's D talent, it's almost a gimme that they'll perform well. It looks like the "assistant" title is merely a money-saving formality and he'll be given the full DC title once this reason disappears. Thus, the only way I see him leaving is if someone outbids the 'Phins for his services as a DC or offers him a HC position straight out.

which is why the argument is essentially garbage. I guess he wasnt listening when Saban said that our offense will stay the same and will be Miami dolphin offense, not mularky offense.

Capers is going to be another set of ears and eyes for his buddy and help him direct the D in the offseason. Another teacher if you will.

Huh? That doesn't make sense. Who brought up offense?

I still don't get what you're talking about. Len said "Can Capers rediscover pass rush in Miami" meaning Can Capers rediscover his own "pass rush" in Miami, and you're talking about Mike Mularky and offense, which Len doesn't even mention in the article?

I think what he was using was an example of how things are going to be Saban's way, not the coordinators way, if you will. For example, the offense will not change simply because Mularkey is now on board. Same goes for the defense, Capers will have to adjust to Saban;s liking, not the players. His point was, Capers won't be tinkering with the pass rush so much to where it could possibly be ineffective like the previous years, thus, he won't have a problem rediscovering the passrush.

Or, at least that is what I took from it.

Ok, well that makes a little more sense. Although I do not really think Len Pasquerelli was even remotely hinting that Capers was going to change the defense himself. He even refers to Capers as being a special assistant.
