Culpepper Career Sacks

Pat Kirwan was on NFL Total Access saying the oline could be better but he does think alot of the problem is Culpepper.

Culpepper played 7 games last year and sacked 31 times.
B Johnson played 9 games last year and sacked 23 times.
Same offensive line, same WRs.

Last year Frerotte was sacked every 13 dropbacks.
This year Culpepper is sacked every 6 dropbacks.
Same WRs, Same TE, Oline only gets one different starter. It is more like two.

Culpepper with Moss in his career 12.5 dropbacks for every sack.
Culpepper without Moss in his career 6 dropbacks for every sack.

Defensive coordinators have said that they started to play Culpepper different when Moss was no longer with him. (This should not be a suprise). Culpepper has always seen mostly the same coverage schemes. Low on the blitzes, very seldom 0 coverage. Deep coverage always rolled to Moss. Double teams on Moss. This made his reads very easy when he had less than a handful of defensive plays to worry about.

Kirwan said: (paraphrase) He has no doubts Saban can fix this problem. It will just take time to remold Culpepper to stop playing the way he did when Moss was a teamate.

last night on total access pat kerwin came on during the around the league segment... he said he had done research on culpepper and found that it is culpepper that is causing the problem on the offense... he said that during c-pep's time in MN while randy moss was there he was getting sacked about 1.5times per game... after moss was traded ... culpepper was getting sacked at a rate of 4.5 times per game ... in miami even with the same o-line that gave up ONLY 26 sacks in 2005... culpepper is getting sacked at a rate of 4.8 times per game... he stated that people around the league have stated that culpepper having moss saw alot of the same coverages that rolled to moss' side of the field .. making it easier on c-pep to read the defense.... when moss left ... culpepper couldn't make the reads quick enough therefore holding the ball too long resulting in more sacks... in miami kerwin states that c-pep is still having the same problem processing his reads ... resulting in more sacks.... while i don't doubt kerwin and his statements... if you look more closely at the miami situation... you can see that on 3 seperate occasions the RB flat out missed his assignment on a fake reverse in the texans game chambers didn't even see the open blitzer on his side and missed that block... this is 4 sacks accounted for by missed assignments from skill position players... i can remember on several more occassions the o-line just broke down ... resulting in sacks... i just don't think culpepper should be blamed solely for the increased sacks it is a combination of the overall offense not getting the job done ... i would like to add kerwin never added anything about mularkey... IMO the offense is in a state of confusion... there are too many breakdowns to suggest anything else ... c-pep can't make his reads if the other players aren't doing their jobs... also when culpepper does try to run to avoid the pressure all too many times he doesn't have the room or space to run... i believe that this is a direct result of the offensive coodinator not doing his job ... the dolphins should be running alot more than 15 - 20 times a game.... hopefully this situation will turn around and the offense will click... it MIGHT not happen this year ... but when it does ... miami will be a dangerous offense!!!

NOT same oline. 3 new starters out of 5

Thats true. While I am not justifying CPep hanging on to the ball too long there are mitigating circumstances such as missed assignments in just about all of the negative plays.Saban made allusions to it in his PC after the loss to the Texans.

I am just waiting for the team to gell.It may be t0o late to make a run at the playoffs but you never know.If they catch on fire they may be able to sustain it throughout the season.

Stop bringing truth and sanity to the arguement.

We all know that every thing is Daunte's fault. After all, the mainstream media and the calm posters on this site are telling us it's Daunte's fault so it has to be.

I agree it's a combination of Malarkey (aka gibberish, bunk, and hot air), the OL, and Culpepper. That said, I firmly believe that Kirwin was right on the mark that CP is the one not making reads, not going through his progressions, and not getting the ball out soon enough. His pitiful play is killing the offense.

Sounds like Pat is clueless.

if you think saban is going to ride dc right into the basement of the afc east your crazy. let him sit on the pine one week and we will see. You dc apologist make me sick.

i have said it before .any time a wideout comes in motion and they have 8 in the box they are going to blitz.i would every time.the play takes so long, and eveyone has seen it 16 times already.throw over the middle and get the safetys back.1.5 to 4.5 is not opinion, but fact.it is what it is.

maybe we wouldn't be having these daunte debates ad nauseum if iur defense could get off the field on 3rd down.

I disagree, I think the plays being called are fine if you have adequate protection, however if you have no protection, the routes can't develop making it appear Daunte is holding on to the ball to long. If the WR's,TE's and RB's haven't gotten to the point where Daunte needs to release the ball, then the pass if thrown sooner will be incomplete or intercepted.

Daunt's protection has been breaking down far to quickly. Missed blocks, missed stunts, and a stationary pocket have made sacking Daunte real easy. The guy's on the line need to play smarter, the FB's, RB's and TE's need to pick up the blitzing DB or stunting D-linemen and the pocket needs to be a mobil one in order for Daunte to be effective and deadly.

i believe the coaching staff that works with these guys every single day KNOW a WHOLE lot more then you or I. I'll take there word for who's the better QB Every SINGLE TIME. I'd hate to see joey go in and the game end up like a certain shutout game from lat year.
