Merged: Preseason: Game 1 (Forget the Score) UPDATED

Well, this is preseason. It is about building and growing. So the score doesn't matter. In fact, I scored it 30-31 Jags win by one point because Hagan had a TD called back on him - twice actually. It was obvious that both defenders had their backs turned to the ball. That is an OBVIOUS pass interference call. Once the ref missed it, the Jag DBs started playing tighter.

Dante took his first step tonight. I think the guy will be ready for week one of the regular season - the games when winning matters. Here is my take on the rest of the team:

QBs: Joey looked decent. No worse than Frerotte for sure. Lemon & Berlin looked good for 3rd string.

RBs: I know the stats do not show it, but they ran hard. Ronnie looked good. He is the type of player that gets better after he settles down. I see him dominating in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Sammy, Kay-Jay and Riggs looked like decent backups. Sammy looks bigger than previous years.

WRs: Didn't see much of Chambers. Didn't see Booker at all. I think Saban is really looking hard for his backups. Welker had one thrown behind him from Joey. Hagan had a TD if the DB didn't maul him (PASS INTERFERENCE!!). Vick was covered and never got a chance to catch one. Russell dropped an easy one, but made up for it with a nice catch for which he paid the price for with a shot from a Jag DB. Willis had a TD and played well against the 3rd and 4th string Jag defense.

TE: McMichael looked like he was picking right up from where he left off in 2005. I'm excited about having him back as our TE. Peelle had a nice catch, but then dropped an easy one. 4th stringer Teyo Johnson needs to turn in his playbook. He looked terrible.

O-LINE: I was happy with them overall. The starters looked good. They were a little slow at times getting outside to block, but nothing really bad. I think they only had one false start the entire game.

D-LINE: They looked great in the 1st quarter. They shut down the Jags' running game. The backups struggled at times. Evans had a great sack, but then what happened to him? Those guys have to mature and realize that you have to execute for 4 entire quarters. Nice sack though.

LBs: Thomas looked quick. Crowder looked like he was just about everywhere. Spragan was seen a few times. The backups were not making much of a statement.

DBs: Ok. This was the BIG problem area for the Dolphins this game. Mitchell looked really bad. Will Allen had a great tackle in the 1st quarter, but got burned for a TD later in the 2nd quarter. Jason Allen played, but wasn't a factor. LeJune looked really bad. Bell and Hill were the two DBs that really played well. I can see them starting opening day at both safety spots if they keep it up. Jason Allen has a lot of growing to do. Lower your expectations for him a bit. He will eventually be great. He has great range. Thank God we still have Daniels, as soon as he recovers from the sprain.

So in summary, Miami's first string players beat the Jags first string players 10 - 0. Miami has a few depth issues. It showed. I expect players to emerge over the next three games though. The only area I am concerned about is the secondary. It has been ripped apart and rebuilt. Will it hold up early in the season? I hope so.

GO FINS!!!! :dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:

nice read.
but i disagree with the DL part Evans played 1st&2nd quarter and was awsome he didnt play all 4 quarters how many rushing yards did the Jags have goin into the 2nd quarter?

also you forgot to mention Goodman was the best DB out there today

Not sure. But I don't remember seeing Evans in there until after halftime. I know Traylor started the game and was a wall. I also noticed that Hill and Bell were popping the Jags' RBs as soon as they got to the LB level.

I think LeJune has alwasy looked bad and the depth we have at Safety I seriously doubt he makes the team. Belll, Tillman, Allen, Cooper, and Hill are probably our keepers there and I am comfident in their abilities. I think at CB we looked weak, but TD wasn't playing.

W. Allen played well mostly but like alot of folks said he swated some balls down, didn't looke well at making an Int. Listened to this on the radio, any thoughts on W. Allen seeing the game in person?

Evans in my book is a godsend. We definalty needed some help at NT and it seems we got it in a 7th rd pick. I hope he can keep it up and be a solid starter next year. Like to hear what CK or anyone else with some good exp has to say about him.

Last is KJ. Didn't get to hear much about him. Seems he ran good when called upon but we did try to pass the ball alot. Maybe the Coachin Staff has the Backfield sorta worked out, but needed to see what the WR can do. Seems logical in my book as well--

Cut Minor as a RB is easy. KJ will show even more next game.
The QR position is wide-open though for spots 4-6 IMO. Cambell needs to get healthy if he wants to make the team.

PreSeason Game #1 Your Take?

PreSeason, The final score is really irrelevant. What did you take away from this game?

The starting D looked good, or did the Jags O just look bad? I think we made some good plays against the run but dropped passed and a suspect WR core made the 1st team Seconday look better then they really deserved.

First drive what 15 yards? Ok, Decent maybe. Ronnie ran well, DC was out there that is about all ya can get from him with 2 passes. Mare kicking a 52 yard FG nice, best part of first drive IMO.

Second drive after a gift Int to Eddie Jackson. McMike was the only stand out here, nice catch in the endzone for a TD. JH threw the ball to him but really McMike was the reason this TD occured. Two plays? yeah nice but don't tell ya to much.

Looking forward to the Reg Season, and the starters you project, what did you take away from this game?

I think the run D is solid. I think with TD and J. Allen getting some more reps the Secondary will really improve.

O-Line seemed to do pretty well but didn't get to watch the game only heard about it, this is the spot where ya really have to watch to get a good idea of what they are doing. I would like some input on what those that seen the game thought of our O-Line, stats seem to show they did pretty well

I know CC is an Awesome WR, I know MB is a solid WR, I know WW is great in the slot. Past that for this game I didn't see much form the top guys. The WR depth chart is the biggest unknown for the Reg Season this year. I fig we keep 6 guys, who are they and who is showing up to play. Campbell needs to get healthy to make the team IMO, with Russel, Gibson, and Murphy working hard to make the team and making plays in PreSeason and TC he might be in doubt of a roster spot. I am looking for Vick to improve next game, I doubt he would clear waivers to the PS so hopefully he makes the team at the #6 WR. Devin A. should be on the PS this year. He is raw and I doubt anyone claims him, he would provide no help this year and just take up a roster spot on the team, possible future with upside but doesn't warrent a roster spot.

I know WR is the biggest unknown, but I want to see more out of our RBs next game. RB for one series then let the rest fight it out. I want to see if KJ can produce more then Minor. I want to see if Riggs should have a chance to make the team. I REALLY want to know if Sammy can be our #2 RB.

I want to see C-Pep play a whole quarter. I am actually happy with what he did this game. The fact that he was just in there was great. Joey looks like at least a lateral movement from Gus, which is more then ok. Cleo is probably one of the best 3rd QBs in the league. Probably a future back-up for us for years. I wish Berlin the best and think he can be a back-up for some NFL teams soon. He is a gamer that doesn't show up for practice alot but performs when it counts, reminds me of Sage. I doubt he sticks here but maybe could be on a depth chart on another team with less talented QBs. Which says alot for our depth.

Z. Thomas is a beast at MLB and is in line for another ProBowl season.
C. Crowder is also a beast at OLB an will join Zach this year in the ProBowl.

Fred Evans is the rookie that showed the most improvement. We really need him to step up.

Oh well I can barely remember what I alredy wrote, so tell me what ya took away form this game.

Yeah. W. Allen played well with the first team defense. But after the first quarter, he didn't look that good, especially when he got burned for that looooong TD by a second year WR. I hope he was just rusty. He needs to be one of our starting CBs.

Peelle had a couple drops I thought, I know marcus vick only caught a couple passes but I thought he showed a little promise

I agree the Secondary has question marks and needs some serious work and gelling to do, but I will say this about them. There was no JT in there, they were missing Travis Daniels, and Jason Allen has had a whole 4 days of training camp. Mitchell is in his first action in 2 years. With JT in there and the Front Seven getting a serious pass rush going, getting TD back on the field and some serious work/game experience for Allen and company I think our Secondary will eventually mesh well together early enough in the season. They know what they need to work on, now let's get to work on it.

the reason voice. That's it! We'll do fine. And more than ready for the opener, I think our DB's might be dominating after the bye

Ok. So I watched the Jags game again. I have it recorded on my DVR, so I was able to rewind and slow motion the plays. Here is some more info to consider (broken down by quarters):

1st Quarter:

Will Allen had a BIG hit on Fred Taylor with the first string defense. His next big play was a pass deflection that Jackson intercepted. Those were his two highlights. His lowlights were a questionable pass interference call and getting burned for the first Jags TD. Both J. Allen and Bell covered the underneath routes forcing W. Allen to go one on one deep.

Shelton looked a bit slow and confused at times. He missed a block on Culpepper's second pass. That is why C-Pep checked down to McMichael. Because Shelton missed a block.

Peelle & Rader both were up & down. They had catches and then drops. Make a block, miss a block.

2nd Quarter:

The backup defense has their moment in this quarter. Evans had a big goaline stop for a loss. Goodman then deflected a pass forcing the Jags first team offense to try for a field goal. Very nice Dolphin defense by the backups.

But after the 1st string Jags offense went out, Miami's backup defense failed badly. Hill missed a certain sack on the Jags backup QB. Roth jumped offsides playing DT.

On offense, Joey fumbled a snap from Wade. Alabi & Toledo were kind of weak on the right side of the O-Line a couple times. But McIntosh stood out amoung the backup offensive linemen.

Brown, Morris and Minor combined for 62 yards in the first half. Not bad at all!

3rd Quarter:

Beasley and Barnes got a couple short grabs. Barnes had a nice one that he broke off of two Jag defnders. Keep in mind that the 3rd and 4th stringers are in during the second half though.

Kay Jay Harris really emerged in this quarter. He looked awesome. He ran 3 straight times for a 1st down. He then converted two 3rd downs. Really good running on his part. Only bad thing he did was miss a key block down near the goaline.

Evans got a nice sack here.

The second Jags TD was another bomb that looked identical to the first one. Mitchell was burned instead of W. Allen this time. J. Allen and Bell were once again covering underneath routes.

Wade Smith was nailed for a holding call. Wade Smith sucks.

Russell emerged in this quarter with two nice grabs after a drop.

4th Quarter:

The 3rd Jags TD came off of a big 3rd down conversion to their RB. There were 4 missed tackles by the Dolphins backup defense. Jason Allen was made to look like a fool on thi splay. He ran himself right out of it. In fact, J. Allen looked like he was running all over the field the whole game missing everything.

TE Teyo Johnson was horrible. He dropped a pass and got upset. He carried it into the next play and missed a block allowing Lemon to get sacked. :fire:

The last Jag TD came because Miami sent everyone and didn't get to the QB.

My game balls go to: Kay Jay Harris on offense, and Fred Evans on defense. They were two bright spots.
