Merged: Preseason: Game 1 (Forget the Score) UPDATED
Well, this is preseason. It is about building and growing. So the score doesn't matter. In fact, I scored it 30-31 Jags win by one point because Hagan had a TD called back on him - twice actually. It was obvious that both defenders had their backs turned to the ball. That is an OBVIOUS pass interference call. Once the ref missed it, the Jag DBs started playing tighter.
Dante took his first step tonight. I think the guy will be ready for week one of the regular season - the games when winning matters. Here is my take on the rest of the team:
QBs: Joey looked decent. No worse than Frerotte for sure. Lemon & Berlin looked good for 3rd string.
RBs: I know the stats do not show it, but they ran hard. Ronnie looked good. He is the type of player that gets better after he settles down. I see him dominating in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Sammy, Kay-Jay and Riggs looked like decent backups. Sammy looks bigger than previous years.
WRs: Didn't see much of Chambers. Didn't see Booker at all. I think Saban is really looking hard for his backups. Welker had one thrown behind him from Joey. Hagan had a TD if the DB didn't maul him (PASS INTERFERENCE!!). Vick was covered and never got a chance to catch one. Russell dropped an easy one, but made up for it with a nice catch for which he paid the price for with a shot from a Jag DB. Willis had a TD and played well against the 3rd and 4th string Jag defense.
TE: McMichael looked like he was picking right up from where he left off in 2005. I'm excited about having him back as our TE. Peelle had a nice catch, but then dropped an easy one. 4th stringer Teyo Johnson needs to turn in his playbook. He looked terrible.
O-LINE: I was happy with them overall. The starters looked good. They were a little slow at times getting outside to block, but nothing really bad. I think they only had one false start the entire game.
D-LINE: They looked great in the 1st quarter. They shut down the Jags' running game. The backups struggled at times. Evans had a great sack, but then what happened to him? Those guys have to mature and realize that you have to execute for 4 entire quarters. Nice sack though.
LBs: Thomas looked quick. Crowder looked like he was just about everywhere. Spragan was seen a few times. The backups were not making much of a statement.
DBs: Ok. This was the BIG problem area for the Dolphins this game. Mitchell looked really bad. Will Allen had a great tackle in the 1st quarter, but got burned for a TD later in the 2nd quarter. Jason Allen played, but wasn't a factor. LeJune looked really bad. Bell and Hill were the two DBs that really played well. I can see them starting opening day at both safety spots if they keep it up. Jason Allen has a lot of growing to do. Lower your expectations for him a bit. He will eventually be great. He has great range. Thank God we still have Daniels, as soon as he recovers from the sprain.
So in summary, Miami's first string players beat the Jags first string players 10 - 0. Miami has a few depth issues. It showed. I expect players to emerge over the next three games though. The only area I am concerned about is the secondary. It has been ripped apart and rebuilt. Will it hold up early in the season? I hope so.
GO FINS!!!! :dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:
