The following are excerpts from legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula in a Sun Sports exclusive interview to be aired Monday night at 7:
Q: Do you ever feel any regret that Dan Marino was never able to win a Super Bowl?
DS: “People always talk about Dan’s career and say he was the best quarterback, the best passer that has ever played the game, he’s got all the passing records. When you talk about Dan’s career and record you always say but – but he didn’t win a Super Bowl. You hate to have your career associated with a but at the end of it. They used to say that about me…and that used to just eat me up. You have to judge Dan Marino’s career by what he accomplished…he was still the best passer who’s ever played the game so give him that credit – give him that due.â€Â
Q: Have your thoughts changed on Nick Saban leaving the Miami Dolphins?
DS: â€ÂI’m not upset that he (Nick) left, he was 15-17 here so I don’t think that they’re losing anything as far as coaching success is concerned. He made a lot of statements about how he wanted to stay here and build this program up and then all of a sudden he’s gone. I think that he should be held accountable and judged the same way that I was held accountable. I always tried to say the right thing and be honest to the people that I’m responsible for and I think he should have done the same thing.â€Â
Q: How should have Mike Shula’s recent firing from Alabama been handled?
DS: “You can’t go from being a coach with a pay raise and contract extension one year to a coach who can’t coach the next year and get fired. I just hope that the people at Alabama that make the decisions get evaluated for the decisions that they make over a period of time – like a coach gets evaluated…keep track of their record and if they’re making bad decisions then they should be evaluated. This would haven been the first year that Mike coached there (AL) that they would have been on a level playing field with the people he’s coaching against. When he took the job they were on probation, their scholarship levels were down and he wasn’t on a level playing field yet he still managed to go 10-2 and win a Cotton Bowl two years ago. I’m just completely upset with that whole decision making process.â€Â
Q: If you were the NFL Commissioner for one day, what would be your first order of business?
DS: “I don’t like instant replay where the referee has to look into the monitor on the sideline - the guy up in the booth has the best vision. That's what college football does, they utilize his expertise and get it down to the referee on the field to make the decision. I don’t like sudden death either, the team that wins the toss of the coin gets the ball, they could get a cheap play or an interference call and kick the field goal on first down from three yards out. I think that the teams that wins the toss, and if they get the football, should have to score a touchdown on that first drive – they can’t win with a field goal on the first drive and after that they could win just like any other time with a field goal. But I hate that cheap win in overtime because of the toss of the coin.â€Â
Q: Is it odd to have things named after you such stadiums and expressways?
DS: â€ÂIt’s a great honor, no question about it, but I still have to pay the toll.â€Â
Q: Who is the best player that you saw across the board?
DS: “Two people come to mind - Paul Warfield and Lenny Moore, RB with Baltimore Coltsâ€Â
