• Dolphins GM Randy Mueller, on free agency starting Friday: ''Our plan probably is, we need quantity over quality. Don't take that the wrong way. But we've got a few holes to fill.'' . . . Miami, which remains noncommittal about whether it wants Ricky Williams back, told Sammy Morris it would like to re-sign him.

Am I alone in thinking that I don't like the sound of that?

I happen to agree with him.We do have a lot of holes and we should not waste our cap space on one expensive free agent .

It probably means we will try to trade down to get a few more picks if the opportunity arises.

I completely understand, but I don't like it. I don't see why we shouldn't break bank on Dielman and Clements- young, marquee players who will reach their peak in 4 years instead of retirement/fossilization(that a word?) age.

We shouldn't be in the business of plugging holes with mediocre, old talent that will probably be more expensive than they would have originally been due to the influx of cap.

I kind of like this idea. Going out and breaking the bank on one or two big name players, doesnt help much when after all is said and done... sure you've improved one position, by one player... but thats not going to help the team as a whole. If you can find a good balance between good players, and good cap numbers, it benefits the team, more than one specific position.

Interesting though how they may choose Sammy over Ricky. I think that helps prove the above theory, Sammy can get the job done as a backup to Ronnie, at a lesser price as well. Gotta find that happy medium, Address all weaknesses, not just one or two.

Mueller does pretty well drafting in the first two rounds. Hopefully, the "quantity" starts in the 3rd round or later.

Who's trying to insert mediocre, old talent? If you break the bank on Dielman and Clements, what happens if they don't succeed high enough to warrant the money? The Patroits and Eagles don't overspend for players, and they still go to the playoffs every year.

They overspend on the key players bubba. There ain't a franchise in the NFL that doesn't.

We overspend on Seth McKinney, Bennie Anderson, etc? Come on now.

We need ONE shutdown corner and all of our OL, IMO, are all disposable with the exception of Carey.

Any stop-gap, in this market, is going to be over spending. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Mueller already has several cheap deals lined up for some hard workers. Beauty. I only want whats best for our club(needless to say).

But from what I keep reading, a bunch of mediocre talent is going to bust banks because of the new cap. Why not take that money and get yourself a stud? And don't play that "What if they don't succeed" crap because I'll tell you not to step out of your house this morning because, hey, what if...?

ricky better return for us or i will be absolutely gutted

i'd be pretty irate aswell because as much as Williams might not deserve a 5th chance, beggers can't be choosers.

I'd understand how Cam & Mueller would want a clean slate with out the worry of Williams, but beggers can't be choosers and make no mistake about it, we are beggers.

if Williams wants to come back and work, let him. What do you risk by allowing a beast to try and be a work horse for yah?

I think it would be pretty ignorant to not allow Williams back on the team. Yes, he let us down. Yes, it was more than once. But guess what? That damage is already done and the Miami Dolphins with Ricky Williams are a much more dangerous football team.

He was talking about free agency, not the draft...

He is completely right... We have need area's and if there are solid (although not star) players that can fill holes then they've done there jobs. As much as I'd like to sign Dielman I don't think he's worth Hutchinson money. As a matter of fact I don't think Hutchinson is worth Hutchinson money. I would take a 1 or 2 year deal on Adam Timmerman to a smaller contract over that kind of money. And as much as we'd like to get Adalius Thomas he is sure to end up with the 49er's who have way more money and a previous coach. Maybe spend some money on Clements but that would be the only big signing...

You only have to look at Shulas later years when under WH direction he tried to buy a SB by signing expensive FAs who turned out to be looking for one final big paycheck rather than winning.

Of course you cant generalize. You have to be able to pick the ones who are still hungry and with their career ahead of them.
