Rick Spielman Thread

In retrospect, I think it's time to give Spielman a thread on his accomplishments during this off-season. Some may not notice because of all the negativity not only from the media, but our fans too :shakeno: , that Rick Spielman has been working extremely to keep this team going forward. Now I won't make a judgment on these people until they have played, but looking at the list, you cannot blame Rick for a lack of effort in his first year as our GM.

2004 Draft "Notables"
Vernon Carey
Will Poole
Tony Bua
Derrick Pope

Off-Season Acquisition "Notables"
Jeno James
John St. Clair
Damion McIntosh
AJ Feeley
David Boston
Marty Booker
Bryan Gilmore
Lamar Gordon
Chris Atkins
Antuan Edwards
Reggie Howard
Sammy Morris

Excuse me if I left anyone out worth mentioning because I'm typing this list from memory, but D@MN, that is a pretty impressive list. With all the negativity going on, I didn't realize all the young talent we've added on this team until I came up with this list. All these guys to go along w/Chambers, McMicheal, Kendall Newsome and Leonard Henry, gives us a very bright future and a lot to look forward to. All of these players will contribute to this team's success in the future. The success will not come over night, but the foundation has been laid and it's obvious. Just be patient and you will see it revealing right in front of you this season.

I've notice his strategy is "acquiring" good young talent with some NFL exposure to speed up the improvement on the offense, while keeping our veteran corp in tact on defense. But, he's been improving our defensive depth through the draft with good young talent, so when it's time to replace our aging vets; we won't miss a beat. In my opinon, it's an excellent strategy that will work. I don't expect a lot this year from our team (at least a .500 season), but from Rick Spielman's efforts, I look forward to watching this team gel together and progress forward.

We might have a sub par season to our standards, but this team will be a force in 2005. Don't get me wrong on this, I'll be cheering, yelling just like all the Fin faithful, but I will not be disappointed if we don't make the playoffs. Unlike a lot of us on this board, through all the negativity, I see a lot of positive in this off season. Thanks RS. :D Keep up the good work.

Spielman was put into a HORRIBLE situation and he did the best he could to rectify it without trading away the house. We still have our core players intact and I think he should be considered for GM of the year. He put us in a position to stay competitive and to NOT make this year a total bust.

the thing i really like is that almost every rookie made the team, except for pape, but he is on PS, so finally we have a GM who can get players on the 53 man roster, who are picked beyond the 3rd round

 I agree completely. Rick has given us hope after all the setbacks we have had this offseason.

It's great to be talking good about our personnel decisions finally. RS has done a good job for his first year. The personnel decisions should've been stripped from Wanny a long time ago. Now Wanny get's to show us if he can go out there and coach.

Good luck Wanny but if it's same old run-pounding trying not to lose football hopefully I'm writing good things about what the Dolphins new coach will be doing next year.

Good job RS. Hopefully Wayne realizes that change isn't always so bad.

I like the job Speil has done myself. He is staying active and filling the wholes, even when a player gets hurt he goes after someone he feels is not just a player at that position, but someone who really has Potential to be as good, or better.

Rick Spielman is a GENIUS......

Lets analyze this:

They offered Ogun to Minnesota for M. Bennett...they were turned down.

They then were offered O.Smith for Ogun straight up....Rick turned it down.

They offered Ogun to Cleveland for Andre Davis and Lee Suggs...They were turned down.

They offered Ogun to Chicago for Booker and Thomas....they were turned down.

They then ended up trading Ogun for Booker and Gordon.....

They ended up getting the best possible deal that was out there...especially after the Vikings thought that we were crazy to think that Bennett for Ogun straight up was a good deal.....

Rick Spielman has moved up several levels in my book.

But, is he a genius or did he just fall into this with a little dumb luck?

Im not knocking the guy, I like what we got in return for O-Gun. But did we fall into this with some luck.......or was this Rick pulling off some mastermind moves here?!

Like most of his moves only time will tell, but in this case it will be easy to compare how OGun does elsewhere to the production we get from Booker and Gordon. Of course, OGun needed to be traded since he did not fit into our cap structure and w/not play out 2004 here

He's doing awesome. If only we had a time machine for the whole #34 thing so we could have drafted better. You couldn't ask more from Spielman so far.

Funny how we're see a number 34 back on the field this year..

we've certainly given up alot for players - which is atypical in this league - not TO trade for a 2nd rder. Rick certainly better get something decent for Ricky next year

let them play first. Because,
a) gave up a 2nd for Feely (could be a problem if feely turns out to be just as good/bad as JF).

b) moved a step up for Carey( although it's highly unlikely, he could be a bust)

c) Boston was a waste of time (ask Cards and SD, they knew)

e) we'll see if Gordon is better than Morris.

d) If Booker makes a better impact on O than the impact of losing Ogun (which remains to be seen.)
