offseason goals

address the WR position. the drops are embarrising, and we cant go into the next season with the exact same group of guys

running game: either better run blockers, or ronnie brown is not the answer. while i dont think ronnie is the great back we where looking for, he has shown enough promise for us to have a sufficient running game to make the playoffs with him next year.

corner back: you cant complain about the overall defense that has shown some incredible heart this year, but you cant have andre johnson single handedly embarress ure secondary, as well as roy williams in the first quarter, and mattjones today. a shutdown corner would complete this aging but great defense.

your offseason goals?

I'm looking for a competetive start.

"Winning out" is not realistic, and, it's not a strategy....

I'm still with Saban, but, I think he's blown his wad.
This next draft won't be good....I already feel it.

The only hope is that his past (Mortgageing the future) picks suddenly
come alive. I'm with him, hopeing that my loyalty will pay off.

:shakeno:

Only so many seasons you can kick Miami around.

I'm looking for consistant play all season and at least 11 wins. I can't take another season without the playoffs.

Ok, I am going to say what has been said for over a decade now: OFFENSIVE LINE. Let's build on an O line and bring in a playmaker or 2 on the offense.

This is a good thread. Because, we were fooling ourselves to think Miami would reach the playoffs this season. It was a 4 game ride that was fun. But things get serious in December. Playoff teams expose bad teams. The Dolphins were exposed today.

So next year, things should be looking up. Here's what I got:

On offense: Culpepper comes back and starts at QB. Joey stays as the backup. Joey will make a good backup. Our WRs go like this: #1 Chambers, #2 Booker, #3 (slot) Welker and #4 Hagan. Barnes stays at FB and we get Ricky back. Ricky and Ronnie team up again as our RBs, and our running game becomes effective again. McMichael stays at TE.

The O-line needs some depth. I'm also not sure about McIntosh starting at tackle. He should be a backup. Jacox at guard is an issue too. So Miami needs to grab a couple O-linemen in free agency much the same way Saban did for the D-line his first year as head coach.

On defense: Miami needs to get secondary help again next season at CB. Daniels and Allen are decent. But Goodman is average at best. This might be where Miami goes in the draft with their first pick. It wouldn't hurt to get a young CB in the draft and maybe another veteran DB in free agency. I think Bell and Hill should stay as the starting safeties. Jason Allen will back them up again next year.

Thomas is getting older and Spragan is average at best. So I think Miami should try and get another LB either in the draft or free aency as well. Unless there is a badass in free agency available, Miami should get another young LB like Crowder to be the future replacement for Spragan. Crowder will replace Thomas one day - not next year though.

On special teams: Miami should let Wes return punts, but it would be nice to see someone else return kicks. Maybe Vick will be ready to return kickoffs next season. I think Minor has to go if Ricky comes back. Morris is a better special teams guy and RB than Minor. Minor is just taking up a roster spot.

Olindo Mare is a major issue this offseason. He is still good at kickoffs, but his field goal kicking has gone WAY DOWN. If Miami can get a better field goal kicker, they should go ahead and let Mare go. He was a great kicker for Miami for years. Much love to him for his years of play. But it may be time for him to go next season.

With these changes, I can see Miami being a more solid group. The biggest goal they need to have next season is to avoid losing streaks. They should lose no more than two games in a row. That puts them way too far back in the race.

Well, here's to 2007... CHEERS!! :D GO PHINS!! :dolphins:

They need to improve the secondary as well as the Offensive line.

The secondary has been pretty bad all season

Get a new OC...hopefully one who knows what calls to make when we get into the red zone.

I agree 100%.This team needs what it hasn't had in 3 decades a dominant offensive line.A line that can play smash mouth football and open up some running lanes againts even the best run defenses such as the Vikings and Jaguars.Hopefully one of the QBs steps up and can at least be above average, then with a dominant offensive line, Ronnie Brown and hopefully Ricky back. Our offense will
be able to win us games, instead of trying to "not lose" them and relying on the defense to hold teams to under 17 pts. Also it would be nice to get some more receivers who can actually catch the Ball consistantly, and a guy with some home run speed.Yes that's asking for alot, but it will all start out with the Offensive Line.

here is my plan of action for next season:

we take some of our cap room that we have and sign Leonard Davis, Arizona wont bring him back and he's a guy that has the ability to start and i think under Houck can live up to some of his potential. furthermore, he's gotta be better than McIntosh. leave the rest of the line alone, they've looked much better, but that LT spot has been horrible.

next, make a play for Adalius Thomas, i know his price might be too high, but if its reasonable pounce on it, dont wait around, push hard for him.

first round of the draft, you all know how i feel, Antoine Cason brings a much needed aspect to this defense, and young, smart, play making corner. if nothing else he gives us a little more size (he's 6ft+), he's a solid tackler as well.

i think that overall, this team isnt as bad as we've shown, if Daunte can come back, and be mobile, and regain some of his old form, we can be a potent team.

the defense plays lights out, but the secondary needs help, the offense has weapons but the line needs help.

i think that if we can grab those three guys along with some role players in the draft and FA, and get off to a solid start, (at least .500 at midseason), then we'll be a scary team down the stretch.

Good post:dolphins:

One thing we must do, we cannot have new coordinators and a all new players. Part of the reason the Miami Dolphins have struggled to get back on the winning track is because every year we have a new system, new things to learn, and new players.

If Saban believes in this secondary we must keep it as it is, keep developing these guys, that is the only way we will have success. Same with the offensive line. We do a lot of talking about consistency, but that requires some help from the coaching staff. We MUST stay with the team we have, because if we keep starting over every year like we have we will continue to be a mediocre team.

Its the same reason why we haven't had success at the QB position, its a revolving door and we need to get a guy, stick with him and develop.

If we go out and change coordinators and change a massive amound of personnel we will start the seaosn flat and by the time we go on a 4 game streak it will be over.

I hoped beyond hope that we could win out but deep down inside I knew it would be next to impossible to win 9 straight. Unfortunately, as was bound to happen at some point, today's game exposed the flaws of this team. I think that we're a decent team capable of beating anyone and capable of losing to anyone. I know that is great analysis as that probably holds true for 2/3 of the NFL. At least, many other NFL fans are in the same boat as we are.

What I think we need to look at during the offseason.

1. QB play has been subpar all year. First Culpepper wasn't 100% and then Harrington has been average at best. I like Joey but he just gives too many points away. Too many ints in the end zone or deep in our territory. You can win with him but he isn't going to put a team on his back. Hopefully Culpepper comes back healthy and gets his timing back. If not, we could do worse than Harrington if we upgrade the rest of our team...namely the O-Line.

2. Our O-Line isn't very good. LT has been a huge problem since we got rid of Webb and neither McIntosh or Shelton are the answer. We need to target a big time LT and throw some serious cash at him. McIntosh is a fine back-up and will probably be cheap so we might want to keep him. But Shelton is a bust and we need to cut our losses. James is decent and I think Carey is going to be pretty good. Otherwise, the rest of the guys are avg. at best.

3. Secondary has been pretty bad most of the season which is disconcerting given that is Saban's specialty. I think we know that Daniels is a nickel guy at best as he was bad today. Will Allen is decent and Goodman is ok, better than I thought he would be. R. Hill shows flashes but we can upgrade there. I like what Bell brings to the table and full year as a starter will probably benefit him. J. Allen hasn't shown much but he is a rookie. Tillman is terrible and hopefully is gone next year. I think this group will be much better given a full year together under their belts. Maybe Poole can come back and give something but we should look to draft a young CB and maybe bring in some bodies.

4. Mare's confidence is shot and once that goes on a kicker, its time to find someone else. He has been very un-clutch the past couple of years and he has killed this year's team. He isn't the main reason we have lost 7 games this year but for a team with little room for error, his misses have been critical. Either he accepts a major pay cut or he is gone. Probably gone regardless.

5. I think its also time to get rid of McMichael. He hasn't done much this year and he is making good money. I have no idea what the cap hit would be, but if its minimal, I'm sure we can find a way to better spend the money. Too many drops and his blocking hasn't been great. More alarming are the number of bonehead plays he makes...the procedure penalties and missed blocks, specifically.

6. I think our skill players on offense are good enough to win. We just have to do a better job of getting them the ball in good situations. I was calling for Booker's head in the beginning of the year but he has shown a burst the past few weeks. Welker is a great security blanket in the slot and is very dependable. Hagan dropped too many balls but is only a rookie and should improve. We are set with Ronnie Brown and if Ricky comes back, we should have a great 1-2 punch.

7. DL is getting old. Probably time to start playing some of the younger kids to see what we have there. Carter, Holliday and Traylor all could be gone. Saban has some interesting choices to make. All 3 have been productive this year but as I said, they are getting old and we'd save alot of money if we moved on. I like Roth and hopefully some of younger DL (R. Wright, Vickerson, Evans, etc) may be ready.

8. LB has been ok this year. Zach still can tackle but he is getting old. Crowder should be stud but needs to be a little more consistent. Spragan isn't asked to do much so we don't get much from him. We need to draft a young LB who can rush the QB ala Merriman.

9. Coaching. I have faith in Saban and think he will turn it around. That being said, next year is critical for him. If we don't show progress next year, he might not ever turn it around.

Realistically, this was a very bad team 2 years ago. Wannstedt and Speilman really gutted the talent on this team so its no surprise that we are not a playoff team yet. Moreover, there has been very little continuity with the coaching staff as we've had so many changes on the coaching staff the past few years. Hopefully another year of Saban upgrading the talent combined with another year in Mularkey's and Caper's systems will finally get us over the hump. I have faith!

Until then, lets win the remaining four games and hope some teams lose.

:yeahthat: AND GET A CB!

1. New kicker
2. New cornerbacks
3. New QB---either a totally recovered Daunte or, if he can't go, someone new.
4. New offensive coordinator
5. New tight end
6. New backup RB.

Plz if any one who counts reads this we NEED a QB Culpecker will never be the same.Oh and an OL.Maybe some DBs would be nice. How bout some LBs? Come back to reality people Sabans wasted 2 years drafting washouts theres no way he ever turns it around We would be better off if he does go to Alabama the guy cant draft cant coach cant motivate cant throw the red flag cant WIN games.
