the name that turns everyone's stomach

an excerpt from an article...pretty scary:sidelol:

One name to watch as a possible front office addition in Minnesota is former Dolphins general manager Rick Spielman, who is working for ESPN.com. The Vikings wanted to hire Tom Heckert out of Philadelphia, but the Eagles gave him the general manager title and a raise.

That would be awesome for the Phins. Saban could hop on the phone and trade Sage for a second rounder, Ricky for Dante and their first rounder. :D

Ricky has that much value now?? Never knew.....

If Rick gets a GM job under normal circumstances, he'll be a good GM. It was the fact that he had to fix all of Wanny's problems in one season or he'd be fired along with Wanny that made him so reckless.

I don't see how you can say that with a straight face. Even if you disregard ALL of the bonehead trades he made, a 2nd (almost 1st) for a third string QB AJ Feeley, a 3rd (almost 2nd) for third string RB Lamar Gordon, Fletcher and a 6th for David Boston (I'll give him that one), there is no argument that giving up a 4th round pick to move up ONE spot at the end of the 1st round to get Vernon Carey was sheer lunacy! No way he will make a good GM anywhere, anytime, with any team. He is an average talent evaluator and I think that is being generous. Rick Spielman sucks.

Aside from the Wale trade, I'm not in the business of defending any of Rick's trades. I just know that any of us who were in a similar situation would have done similar types of things. The situation he was put in wasn't right.

thats why the vikings arent considering me for their GM

No, that's because you don't have the resume that Rick has. ;)

Really, imagine that you're a successful salesman for an organization that is having major problems. They sack your boss and make you VP of sales, telling you that you have to double sales in six months or you're gone. You're going to take crazy risks to try to make that happen.

NFL Live reports Daunte to stay as a Viking
Yeap, Chris Mortensen just reported this 2 minutes ago. Brad Childress has told him that Daunte Culpepper is their guy and will be the Quarterback for the Vikings once he is cleared by the team doctors to start in the middle of Next Season. Daunte Culpepper was recently called and is on it's way to Minnesota to talk with Brad Childress about future Viking's plans.

So for everyone who was on the "Daunte Culpepper to Miami" bandwagon, you may step down and sneak away slowly without no one noticing.

I definately would not be taking CRAZY risks. And that is exactly what Spielman's trades were...crazy. They made no sense at the time and they certainly cost us talent we could have aquired with all the picks he made disappear. That would not look very good on my resume if I got canned and was looking to catch on with another team.

Exactly. If you're trying to dig out of a hole REAL quick, you may not be as neat with your shovel.

It's pretty easy to compare Saban/Mueller favorably to Spielman when they know they'll have 3 to 5 years to develop the team. Spielman had one year. If he didn't land Vernon Carey, for example, he wouldn't have had the offensive line on paper to win in that one year. The problem is that the rest of the league knew it, so they could jab him in trades. Blame Huizenga for that.

You see, I don't think it hurts him that much. Despite the fact that many of the moves were crazy, Rick gets to say that he did what Wayne wanted him to do -- try to turn the team around in one offseason. He gets to point out that he would do several things differently if he had a proper amount of time. In fact, he probably has documentation he can point to that indicates he didn't think x, y, and z were good ideas.

It seems that this theory holds some water if at least one team is considering him for a job. :D

Agree totally. Maybe Matt Millen will hire him.

The name Spielman doesn't turn my stomach, but Wannstadt does!
