Chiefs released CB Patrick Surtain.
The move clears over $6M in cap space. Surtain was an effective starter three years ago, but his play fell off a cliff the following season and he lost his nickel back job to undrafted rookie Maurice Leggett in 2008. Surtain, who turns 33 in June, will probably not catch on elsewhere this offseason.

Sad to hear he might not cacth else where, I wish him the best of luck

I think he will retire...Surtain was one of my fav. Dolphin players

I miss the days of dominating Defense in Miami. I only had 2 good years of it too.

I remember when Jay Fiedler was our biggest concern.

that defence was awesome - name roll off .........surtain, madison, marion, thomas, taylor and bowens.....even ogunleye and D gardener were good. Should have done more with D like that. Can you imagine what BP and TS wld do with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We did waste his career, we sent him to die, a hard but slightly necessary cap casualty, which its hard to swallow seeing how our DB position has been and now.

Last year I saw Surtain trying to catch a lineman who had picked up a fumble and he couldn't catch him. It was pathetic. I knew then he was done.

another great player. whose career we wasted. whom we never gave a chance at a ring.

Let's not be melodramatic. He was a very good player, NOT a great one.
There are many great players who never got a ring.
Marino, Fouts, Derrick Thomas, Bruce Smith etc. etc.
In terms of CB's, how about Albert Lewis and Kevin Ross

Except that they disappeared in big games, especially playoff games.

He didn't have a big name like Deion Sanders or anything, but he was a great one. Defenses just wouldn't throw to his side so he wouldn't get many opportunities to get INTs. I still remember a long time ago, like maybe six years ago Peyton Manning said in an interview that he thought Surtain was the best corner he had faced.
