Here's a snapshot into how the Dolphins found some of these guys:
• How convinced were the Dolphins about Bess? Agent Ken Zuckerman said GM Jeff Ireland, immediately after the draft, told him, ''I really like this kid, and he's going to make our team.'' And Zuckerman said upon signing Bess, Dolphins college scout Adam Engroff told him, ``We have our Wes Welker.''
Though Bess didn't run well at the NFL combine, the Dolphins loved his quickness and kept tabs on him. ''He's quicker than he is fast,'' Sparano said. Fourteen teams pursued Bess after the draft, and two offered slightly higher signing bonuses than Miami's $7,000. But Bess ''decided pretty quickly on Miami,'' Zuckerman said. ``They were at the top of his list because they had so many available spots and didn't have anyone like Davone.''
Sparano said identifying and signing Bess ``was a combined effort' '. He credited Ireland and his staff and receivers coach Karl Dorrell -- who coached UCLA last season and ``knew a lot about him being on the West Coast.''
• In Carpenter's case, '' Steve Hoffman is responsible largely,'' Sparano said of the Dolphins' kicking coach. ``Steve flipped over a lot of rocks, and we found this guy and it worked out good.''
Hoffman went to Montana to work him out before the draft, and Miami was one of only two teams that offered a contract. Agent Ken Staninger wouldn't name the other, but he knows Bill Parcells well and knew he could trust Parcells when Parcells said Carpenter would be given a fair chance, even with Jay Feely there. Carpenter, who committed to Miami less than 30 minutes after the draft, has made 16 of 18 field goals.
• Agent Peter Schaffer said ''a bunch of teams'' inquired about fullback
Polite -- waived by the Bears in late August -- but ``Bill and Jeff made it a no-brainer. Players know if you go to a Parcells/Ireland team it helps their career because they give players equal opportunity regardless of their draft status.''
Polite, who signed Oct. 16, had nine carries for 26 yards in 32 games over four previous seasons (three with Dallas). In seven games this season, he has seven carries for 28 yards and made a first down on both of his fourth-down rushing attempts. ''The guy does all the little things,'' Sparano said. ``Very smart, can catch, has run skills. We knew a lot about Lou from Dallas.''
• Sparano credits Ireland, Parcells and assistant player personnel director Brian Gaine for finding second-year pro London, claimed off waivers from the Giants in late August. He had a 14-yard catch Sunday, and at 6-4, he has an intriguing skill set. ''They had their finger on him for a while,'' Sparano said.
Since then, Parcells has counseled London, offering advice on blocking and telling him ''don't try to be flashy'' when he caught a ball one-handed in practice. ''I'm wide-eyed when he talks to me,'' London said.
