PFT Predicts Gailey

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS FOR CAPERS
Alex Marvez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Dolphins have made defensive coordinator Dom Capers the highest-paid assistant coach in the NFL, with a three-year deal worth just under $8 million.
The average value of the package is $2.7 million per year, which bests the $2.6 million annual salary of Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
But the move strongly suggests that Capers won't be the team's next head coach. He interviewed for the job earlier this week in Jacksonville, and there would be no reason to block him from leaving as of February 1 if he were going to be named the head coach before then.
Also, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is a finalist for the Miami job, along with Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Mort also confirms that Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey is a finalist for the position.
It previously has been reported that Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin had made it from the initial group of 12 down to the second cut of five.
The massive deal given to Capers also suggests that the next head coach will be an offensive specialist. It wouldn't make sense to hire a guy like Tomlin, who would want to install the Tampa 2, after giving big money to Capers.
The decision to extend Capers also raises questions regarding the retention of assistant coaches before a head coach is hired. We think it's a stoopid manuever -- unless, of course, the Fins already have determined that the guys they have in mind for the job are willing to keep Capers.
Finally, kudos to Capers for having the sack to accept a one-year deal. He joined the Fins after being fired by the Texans last year, and the performance of the Miami defense had him on the list of potential replacements for defensive coordinator Tim Lewis in New York.
Our guess? Though we scoffed at his chances in Miami or in Pittsburgh, Gailey could indeed by the guy. And, as Peter King suggested last week, it could be that Gailey is merely the caretaker unless and until Bill Cowher becomes the head coach in 2008 or 2009. Gailey spent four seasons with Cowher in Pittsburgh before becoming the coach of the Cowboys, and Capers once was the defensive coordinator in Pittsburgh under Coach Chin.
Also on the Fins staff is offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who likewise worked as offensive coordinator with Cowher before becoming the coach of the Bills.

Let me guess, PFT is nothing but gossip. All they do is sling sh... at the wall and see what sticks. Most of you love to hate PFT. I get it. From time to time though these guys are on the money. They had recently been braking news for months on something about a tide or the Tide... Tusculoosa something... I dunno. I forget. Anyways, I digress. It's not PFT I'm concerned about but Chan Gailey. All the connections are there, and there are a plethora of freagin connections. Would you guys mind taking on Gailey for a year if infact Huizenga wants a caretaker until he whisks Cowher away from North Carolina? At this point, I'd take any coach as long as the power structure, as reported in the home page(and threaded by yours truly yesterday), will change. Thoughts?

I would absolutely hate this move. I'm not in favor of Chan Gailey as coach, and I'm not in favor of waiting for Bill Cowher to decide when and where he wants to coach again.

I personally do not want Gailey, but actions speak louder than words and they have said good things about Gailey before and now here he is.

I think there are two for sure's in this in Gailey and Shotty. PFT simpy thinks Gailey instead of Shotty. But I havent heard Gailey getting a second interview. If so, that can be good or bad. They may know what they have in Gailey. Shotty just has to put his offensive philosophy on display in his second interview. I think the jets saying he is as good as gone is a better indication of who we end up with rather than PFT's crapslinging approach.

And also this Capers move is not a bad move. PFT is full of dolphin hating crap. Gailey or Shotty probably have already agreed to keep Capers and this #4 defense with the best MLB in the game (most consistant) and the DMVP playing in it. Why would any new HC want to mess with something that is working just fine! duh. PFT sucks!

PFT must be reading message boards across the internet because they are just repeating what so many fans are already saying.

If Chan Gailey is willing to take the job for only one year, then he is not the head coach for us.

I seriously think that they post stuff that they've heard fans say. I also think that they read message boards and post rumors based on what they've read.

I did a little mathematics this weekend, and I concluded that PFT is about 85.26% correct.

NO NO NO to Gailey. That would be really stupid. He's a guy who likes the run, run, short dumpoff pass and punt type of offense. He's a conservative play caller. A Kippy Brown or Dave Wannstedt all over again. NO WAY!!!!!!

Why in the love of God would Wayne want Chan Gailey??!!!! Is that the BEST guy we can find for the job???!!!! Chan Gailey???!!!! :shakeno: PLEASE!!!! He is NOT the answer. :tantrum:

If they hire Gailey I denounce my dolphin fan membership. I DO NOT WANT CHAN GAILEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gailey might turn out to be the guy, but PTF's speculation seems off base to me. Why would Gailey even entertain leaving his head coaching job at Georgia Tech just to be, in effect, a "lame duck" coach. I think if he does become our coach it's with the intention of being so for at least 4-5 years, and not as a placeholder for Cowher.

I will be one ticked off Dolphin fan if we hire Gailey as the head coach. He is NOT the guy we want and NOT the guy we NEED!!!!!

Some of you simply amaze me with your ignorance. First of all, you actually think the Dolphins came up with this crap idea of hiring an interim head coach until they can bring in Bill Cowher. That's just stupid. That's nothing more than something Peter King threw out there, and PFT and some fans have simply taken it and run in an attempt to degrade this organization. Second, anyone that thinks Chan Gailey is a bad head football coach doesn't know a damn thing about this game. Chan Gailey has won 62% of the games he has been a head coach in. God forbid the Dolphins actually hire a guy with a winning record as a head coach. No. You would rather hire a guy that was 18-37 as a head coach because he runs a flashy offense based around the best player in the NFL and one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. You would rather hire a coach that many consider to be an offensive genius, except when he conveniently forgets to run the football among the plethora of passes he loves to call and continuously outsmarts himself with his play calling.

Basically, you would rather hire flash over substance. Let's completely ignore the fact that the two candidates (maybe three if you include Mike Tomlin, but it doesn't look like he will get the 2nd interview) have a history of doing wonders with limited talent within their offensive schemes. Brian Schottenheimer's history is only one year, but he did miracle work with the talent the Jets had offensively. Chan Gailey has polished turds everywhere he has been. He manufactured an offense with probably the least amount of skill position talent any team has every had in Miami and a patchwork offensive line. Chan Gailey was able to make Kordell Stewart look like a quarterback in Pittsburgh. He took over a Dallas team that was 6-10 prior to his arrival and went 18-14 with them, taking them to the playoffs in both of his years as a head coach. All he's ever done at the college level is win. He won a D1AA National Championship at Troy State. He's got experience coaching on both sides of the ball, so he understands that you need both a good offense and a good defense to be successful.

This idea that hiring him would be a mistake and the worst thing the Dolphins can do shows how little some of you know about this game and the coaches in this game.
