Merged:Will Poole undergoes very successful surgery/ Done for the year??

Not a shock and nothing that will change the outcome we already knew...I don't think I have ever heard a team press release saying "Surgery went terrible, seasona nd career could be in doubt"

Not trying to be a jerk, I am asking seriously, do they ever say that the surgery was not successful? I've never seen it.

with that news the law threads should cease, no need for law now with poole coming back mid season .....

There is a risk of death to any surgery. Obviously the ones that do result in death are said to be unsuccessful.

I don't know that I remember any recent surgeries on professional athletes that were unsuccessful in either that sense or in the sense that the goal was not accomplished. This likely has to do with the skill set of the surgeons the teams/players retain for these serious procedures and with the fact that young persons in good shape probably have a smaller chance of having an unsuccessful outcome.

:yeahthat:

These players get the best surgeons possible. There's always a chance of something bad happening, but the odds are very small.

when will he be ready to play though?

Actually, I can think of three examples. Grant Hill in basketball had many operations where the doctors even said it didn't go well. Adrian Beltre of the Mariners had a botches appedix removal while with the Dodgers. It caused him to miss a lot of a season and lose a ton of weight. Basically cost ihm a year of his career.

Also, I believe OJ McDuffie of our very own Dolphins was misdiagnosed and then had that followed up with career ending surgery. I might have this wrong though. So yeah, it does happen, just not very happen. When you think about it, it shouldn't. These guy are worth millions and owner's have tons o fmoney invested, therefore, only the best surgeons generally take care of them.

Barry Bonds has had a couple of botched knee surgeries as well this year.

I know its serious... but the simplicity of this statement is comic genius!!

I think the reason that most surgeries are successful is due to the advancement in medical technology. An ACL reconstruction is a very common medical procedure these days. Years ago, this surgery was much more complicated and therefore was less likely to be successful.
