Merged: Willie Williams

It seems like I remember reading where we were interested in him.

Here are some kind of contradicting reports.

• Kiper said former UM linebacker Willie Williams probably will not be drafted out of NAIA Union (Ky.) College (11.5 sacks in 2008). But agent Ken Rich said the Dolphins ''sent a letter and have interest in bringing him down in March,'' and the 49ers, Saints and Raiders called. ``His past issues are behind him and he's got a daughter he's concerned about.''

• The Dolphins invited Memphis/former UM running back Charlie Jones and 11 Canes to audition -- the Fins' John Beck threw passes to Chris Zellner and Kayne Farquharson -- but decided not to invite former UM linebacker Willie Williams, who wanted to come.

I’ll tell you what, there’s no doubt about it, he’s a very bright kid. The intelligence factor, that’s not an issue with Willie. I think the thing that was a problem with Willie as a youngster was he was probably a little immature.

I'm not sure how intelligent a person can be...with his past. Does he deserve a second...third chance...possibly...but I wouldn't use a draft pick on him...only as a free agent.

I hope he gets a shot. Unfortunately, a lot of the kids in the neighborhood are taught to act a certain way, kind of taught to be a follower, it takes years of positive influence from mentors, coaches and peers to break out of it...but the individual has to want to do it. He has to stop trying to be cool, and start trying to be a man. Maybe this kid is ready to be a man.

Willie Williams

What about Willie Williams? We need some help at the Linebacker position so why not roll the dice on guy with some freakish freakish talent like the great Willie Williams.

Many of you may not be familiar with Mr. Williams, so let me inform those the best I can. This kid was highly recruited by the University of Miami back in 2004. He was tabbed to be the next Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, etc. The kid was an absolute monster in high school.

But he had a lot of character issues. He was arrested 11 times in high school on various charges. But Willie has learned a lot and understands a lot about life and the decisions he made as a kid.

Believe me when I say I know about the kids that come thru the doors of UM and this kid has the size and the ability to play at the NFL level. He's 6'3 230lbs and according to combine results he did 26 reps which is one more than Aaron Curry. He also ran in the 4.5 area as well.

I haven't heard much about Willie since he left Miami but it seems to me that Willie is no refocused and motivated. Seems that all he wants is a chance to prove himself. He didn't complain when he had to go to Louisville or when he had to go to Glenville State.

Maybe I'm a bit bias here—and I'm very good keeping emotion and the bias out of my judgment—but maybe I just really want this kid to succeed because he went thru so much at Miami, etc., and it seems to me like this kid genuinely wants to do the right thing and realize his truly freakish potential.

Your thoughts?

I'd give him a shot, I remember being real excited to have him at UM but it all went down hill. There was an article going around about how hes grown up and his life has changed. Give him a shot and if he were to get signed you can always add a clause to the contract about him getting in trouble. One mistake and you done type of thing

The thing is that Bill Parcells has always stayed away from guys with character issues so either way, I believe it's a longshot. But if he's there in the 6th or 7th round...there's just too much upside to this.

A no brainer IMO . . . I definitely would roll the dice on him. Talent wise . . . he is the most talented linebacker out there physically.

You are right, but with a UDFA he seems to be willing to take gambles sometimes.

I hope he turns it around and succeeds. However, I can't imagine that Miami would be the best place for that. It's a lot easier to be a new man when your in a different setting. Coming back home and trying to turn things around with so much family and old friends around is really hard.

parcells stayed away from character issues guys ... but when it comes to guys like lawrence taylor, he puts a blindfold on and lets the guy play.
