The NFL may be the most successful league in the country, but that doesn't mean it's without competition.

Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street businessman, and Tim Armstrong, a senior executive at Google, have decided to start up a rival football league, the United Football League, according to a report on the New York Times web site Wednesday. For those worried that the UFL will lack name recognition,

Hambrecht and Armstrong already have one owner lined up: Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

And though the league is having a difficult time finding other owners, it appears Cuban is committed to the plan. The league intends to play its first preseason games in August of 2008.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a group considering formation of a football league that would compete with the NFL for players drafted lower than the second round.

The league, still very much in the preliminary stage, would play its games on Friday nights. The NFL does not play then because of the potential conflict with high school football.

"It's a pretty simple concept," Cuban said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "We think there is more demand for pro football than supply."

The proposal was first disclosed by The New York Times on its Web site, which said it was the idea of Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street investor who was a minority partner in the Oakland Invaders of the USFL, which played in the spring from 1983-85. Sharon Smith, a spokeswoman for Hambrecht and Company, had no comment and said Hambrecht was traveling and unavailable to talk about the idea.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said he was aware of the proposed league, but had no further comment.

 Whats he gonna say? "This won't last long"?

Its possible that if they had the right rules, got enough name stars (even if they are past their prime), and ran it at a time like now, when there isn't anything NFL going on, it might be able to do ok on cable tv and get some fans to the games...But if they seriously think they could go head to head during the fall with the NFL and stand a chance, they are off their rockers...

NFL | Cuban may create rival football league
Wed, 30 May 2007 16:42:40 -0700
The Associated Press reports Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is a part of a group that is thinking about forming a new football league that would compete with the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/77/nfl">NFL. This new league would play on Friday nights and the teams would look to add players who are making lower salaries on NFL teams. Teams may go after undrafted players and even drafted players selected after the second round because they could pay more than the NFL teams are allowed to offer them. This idea is in the preliminary stages.

Ehh

Did XFL work? No

Did AFL work? Kinda

Could this work? Maybe.

Having my doubts though.

If Vince McMahon didn't own the XFL, I think it would have succeeded. I think some people were under the impression that it was WWF football, not an actual football league. IMO it was good football. I think competition would be good for the sport.
