Dolphins OLB Joey Porter is reportedly worried his career could be threatened by his chronic back injury.

Porter reportedly has been in pain for over a month. Miami is planning for an "extended absence," trying DE Phillip Merling at Porter's right outside spot behind Charlie Anderson. This could crush the Fins' pass rush early on.

So on Monday, the Dolphins put Charlie Anderson back in the starting weak-side linebacker spot. And they are experimenting with rookie defensive end Phillip Merling as the backup -- a contingency that has the feel of a long-range answer to a long-range problem.
''I'm getting a reasonable amount [of work] with ends and linebackers,'' Merling said. ``They said I might be going out there a little bit as a backup to learn the position. It's going pretty good. I'm learning from Joey and the coaches.''
The problem here is Porter isn't paid to coach. He's paid to play.

This is not good, but you have to thank god Roth is emerging and Merling is being groomed as a possible long term answer. Anderson would fill in for Porter. Nontheless this is not good and I can imagine is checking tis options right now as we speak. The stinkin Jets have real good TE and you have to wonder what Miami's game plan is gonna be to cover those guys.

where did this come from out of no where? He's played EVERY preseason game so far.

This news sucks especially after the game we just had. Torbor could move inside and we could try Akin on the outside if worst comes to worst.

now we know why merling is getting reps at olb so early. porter being out changes things regardless of merlings reps being on the strong side.

figures...

2 things.

1. This blows... but seriously... if it's between playing on a .500 team for another year or two, or having the ability to walk in 5 years painfree... who can blame the guy?

2. If he retires due to injury, aren't we freed of that massive contract? Maybe we an pick someone up then? Not sure how that works.

Pittsburgh management must be laughing their a$$e$ off. They knew he was done, and the Dolphins were stupid enough to move in on him.

Merling getting reps at OLB could be a blessing in disguiss. The kid is a baller if he can play OLB it could be a very good thing for us.

Its not like we traded for him, so why should Pitt be so happy. Porter gave them his all and the released him just like that, it was not classy at all.

Wow....sounds like Porter is done.

The youth movement will be in full effect once JP and Holliday are gone.

Don't know if that's a good thing though.

JT wanting to leave really messed us up. I dont think the new regime wanted to trade him I think JT just did not want to play for us anymore and he chose a team to go to who might not be very far from what we have.

He sure didn't look like he was in pain when he jumped up off Croyle and was celebrating the sack with Crowder. Just an observation.

Next year we will Draft WR,OLB, Safeties, DT, CB. Forget about any sexy picks next year. We really need an OLB and a WR.
