Dolphins OLB Joey Porter is reportedly worried his career could be threatened by his chronic back injury.
Porter reportedly has been in pain for over a month. Miami is planning for an "extended absence," trying DE Phillip Merling at Porter's right outside spot behind Charlie Anderson. This could crush the Fins' pass rush early on.

So on Monday, the Dolphins put Charlie Anderson back in the starting weak-side linebacker spot. And they are experimenting with rookie defensive end Phillip Merling as the backup -- a contingency that has the feel of a long-range answer to a long-range problem.
''I'm getting a reasonable amount [of work] with ends and linebackers,'' Merling said. ``They said I might be going out there a little bit as a backup to learn the position. It's going pretty good. I'm learning from Joey and the coaches.''
The problem here is Porter isn't paid to coach. He's paid to play.

This is not good, but you have to thank god Roth is emerging and Merling is being groomed as a possible long term answer. Anderson would fill in for Porter. Nontheless this is not good and I can imagine is checking tis options right now as we speak. The stinkin Jets have real good TE and you have to wonder what Miami's game plan is gonna be to cover those guys.
