Better yet, if he dropped 50 pounds he could be a safety. He would really help in our run support that lacked so much last year.

DE's are gold to BP with OLB's off the edge running a close 2nd. Merling was drafted to play there - no doubt about it. Why move a guy playing one of the most important spots on the team to ILB? I think the only question is whether he settles in at DE or OLB. Either way he hopefully is there for awhile and makes some big plays for us.
I could see Merling playing on this team a Greg Ellis type of roll in dallas. Excellent DE and very good OLB. Being versital enough to do both is a great bonus and adds flexabilty to our D.
I would rather have him play like Adelius Thomas from New England...
Everything I read about Merling around the draft said he was a beast against the run but lacked the true speed to amass huge sack totals at the next level... Only time will tell if this is indeed the case... But looking at the dreadful run defense we had last year I think we are best served with him as a true DE in the 3-4, taking up space and O-Linemen... I think the pressure is on guys like Crowder to step up and prove they belong rather then converting a guy who might play more naturally elsewhere. With the number of bodies we have brought in on the DL obviously it is THE priority on defence and rightly so... We need improved DL play, period.
