Mets trade Benson

That's not a cash move. That's a WE HAVE NO BULLPEN move!

Actually, Mike, it's part cash move (this saves the Mets $16 million on Benson's overpriced deal) and part "we have to replenish our farm system". Julio's nothing special, and I believe the focus of the deal was this guy:

John Maine was the Orioles' #1 pitching prospect. Granted, that's like being a big fish in a small pond, but still, he projects as a pretty good starter. His progression has been steady, his K/BB ratio is solid and he showed improvement at the big league level from his previous stint.

The Orioles originally thought they could give the Mets Julio for Benson straight up. I think Minaya was ready to do that deal until other teams expressed interest. So he held onto Benson, and the O's upped the ante by finally offering Maine.

If nothing else, the Mets can probably package Maine and Mike Pelfrey to the Marlins for Dontrelle Willis at midseason.

I think it's a bad move by the Mets. Even if it was a cash dump. Benson is a pretty solid number 3 guy and with Pedro and Glavine not getting any younger or healthier it's a risky move in my opinion. Julio is a poor man's Benitez, I hope the Mets aren't counting on him being anything special.

This is the one thing I do worry about. Martinez is an injury risk. Glavine is old. Trachsel is both old and an injury risk. Of course, Benson was an injury risk, too, but the point remains, the Mets have cannibalized their potential starting depth. There's a guy at Norfolk, Eric Junge who looks like a successful reclamation project, and the likely 6th starter if/when they need one, or they could call up prospect Brian Bannister, who absolutely dominated AAA last year in his brief time there and might be ready for the show. Or they could plug in the just-acquired John Maine, who is ready for the majors. So they have options, but none proven.

That said, with the payroll space they've created, the Mets could also take on a decent starter in a salary dump type deal. Or a slugger whose name rhymes with "Shamirez", and just club opponents to death under an avalanche of runs. ;)

I wish we would have kept Benson... even though he is overpriced. I fear Tom Glavine as a Mets fan personally, he is just too inconsistent and he is running out of gas. I wish we would have traded him instead... just my opinion.

Shamirez? What player rhymes with that?

I admit I'm not very knowledgable about the Mets farm system other than Lastings Milledge and Jeff Kapinger (you obviously know your team) anyway I personally think Omar did this to dump money to sign Barry Zito over the winter.

But like you and I agree on, the Mets rotation right now has injury ? marks (but then again what MLB team doesn't have injury risks). I do think that the Mets weakened both their rotation and bullpen with his move for the 2006 season. I think throwing Heliman into the set up role would have been a good idea, and treated him like the Twins treated Johan Santana. But we'll see spring training is just around the corner.

I still wish we had held on to Seo. He was really starting to look good in the second half of last year. Then again, he was probably traded at his highest market value. I'm just very unsure about the depth for the rotation.

Too bad they couldnt just get rid of Benson and keep his wife around.

I don't think Maine was the top pitching prospect. Chris Ray is probably number 1, then Hayden Penn and Adam Loewen. Maine had a nice 2003, but look at those AAA numbers over two separate years. Ouch. Numbers in the majors aren't wonderful, either.

Thing with Maine and Pelfrey for Dontrelle, Phil, is that every deal we've made has brought back great talent. And considering we've essentially robbed the Mets' system dry - with the notable exception of Milledge, whom we could have had but chose Petit - we're probably not gonna end up doing that. ;)

Benson's wife held a press conference over this::::::

Anna Benson called a news conference last night in Manhattan at which she expressed displeasure with the trade. "I think if he was traded because of any potential talks with Playboy or anything like this, then that's a dirty, nasty, rotten trick," Newsday quoted Anna as saying. "That's really a freedom-of-speech infringement on me. He's my husband. I'm his wife. He's not responsible for what I do and I'm not responsible for what he does. I have my own career, and it should be separated."

Well, Maine was their #1 prospect last year, as I read it, and since I'm not terribly familiar with the Orioles system, he could have easily been passed by those guys, in large part because I think they were planning to stick him in the rotation. You're right, the AAA and majors numbers don't inspire awe, but the improvement was clearly there, and that's what I'm looking for. He'll struggle as the 6th starter/middle reliever, in all likelihood, but in the end, I think he'll probably end up as a quality 4th or 5th starter from what I've read. I also really like the fact that it doesn't look like he's ever had injury problems.

:chuckle:

I HATE the Yankees with a passion, and I used to like Damon when he was with Boston but now that he put on a Yankee uniform I can't stand him either... but his wife is ******* hot.

Damon's wife is a piece of work, just like Benson's. The NY Press is going to love having Mrs. Damon around, I'm sure some of the players will too.

(P.S. GREAT avatar man)
