Johnson, who was built up by many to be a potential second or third-round selection, went undrafted due to undisclosed reasons. The most likely? No teams wanted to spend a useful pick on a guy who never lived up to expectations after being a highly sought after high school recruit. Johnson could quite possibly be one of the draft’s biggest “boom or bust” prospects.

The former LSU DT has nice size at 6-foot-2, 308-pounds. Johnson shows good burst and quickness off the line and uses his strength to break through double teams to get into the back field and disrupt the play. He is still quite young and has the tools to be a very good defensive tackle at the next level, which is perfect for the Miami defensive staff.
Johnson needs to become much stronger at the point of attack, however. If he allows a blocker to get into his chest, he can be easily turned and maneuvered, which is not something you want in your stud defensive tackle. He needs to become a much better pass rusher overall and use different moves to get through the line of scrimmage to get some pressure on opposing QBs. He’s too athletically gifted to not be getting pressure.

With a UDFA, there's no such thing as boom or bust. It's boom or cut-for-zero-loss.

Johnson is a diamond masquerading as a bit of a turd, imo. His hand use is absolutely garbage, but he has serious smarts and dx ability, to go with middle-of-the-road-at-worst athleticism. Kacy Rodgers could work wonders with this kid over a season or two, I believe.

it took Paul Solia a few years before he became a beast

If Johnson isn't one of the final 53, I'll be surprised. Didn't see him going undrafted. After Jackson Jeffcoat, he might be the most surprising UDFA of the 2014 Draft.

How would an undrafted rookie be considered a "bust" if he doesnt make the team.

it's not just you guys

cause if these two guys are correct and I seriously hesitate to doubt them
- huddle reports #1 mock and top 100 - he could be a huge steal

and it's not just him

they make our entire draft sound like the Italian Job

5 top 75

according to perez we basically had 4 picks between 63 and 75
and dbg value board suggests that damn near everyone
but arthur lynch had a third round grade or better

keep an eye on perez

this was only his first attempt

just trying to figure out who's roster spot he takes

I think Starks, Odrick and Mitchell are locks to make the 53 man roster. The fourth defensive tackle spot should come down to Johnson or AJ Francis, who was everybody's darling in 2013 training camp.

Excuse my ignorance - what is dx ability? It sounds like something good.

Huge disappointment in college and there was no reason for him to even be considered a 3rd round pick. He is an intriguing player because of his so called ability when he came out of high school but he wouldn't be the first top prospect that didn't do squat in college or pros. Brock berlin was once the top prospect in college

I think he's referring to the ability to diagnose a play. Which is something nice to have as a DT...as long as he also has the ability to disrupt the play at the point of attack, and or is abled to get to the back field to sack/disrupt the QB's play.
