Johnson, who was built up by many to be a potential second or third-round selection, went undrafted due to undisclosed reasons. The most likely? No teams wanted to spend a useful pick on a guy who never lived up to expectations after being a highly sought after high school recruit. Johnson could quite possibly be one of the draft’s biggest “boom or bust” prospects.
The former LSU DT has nice size at 6-foot-2, 308-pounds. Johnson shows good burst and quickness off the line and uses his strength to break through double teams to get into the back field and disrupt the play. He is still quite young and has the tools to be a very good defensive tackle at the next level, which is perfect for the Miami defensive staff.
Johnson needs to become much stronger at the point of attack, however. If he allows a blocker to get into his chest, he can be easily turned and maneuvered, which is not something you want in your stud defensive tackle. He needs to become a much better pass rusher overall and use different moves to get through the line of scrimmage to get some pressure on opposing QBs. He’s too athletically gifted to not be getting pressure.
