Adam Gase learned lessons about how to best manage his time during his first season as an NFL head coach.

And Gase has made at least one adjustment for the 2017 season.

Gase, who calls offensive plays for the Dolphins, plans to spend more time with the defense, as he said in an interview with John Congemi on behalf of the club’s official web site.

“Knowing that as a head coach, you can help the defensive coordinator a lot more that what you realize at the time,” Gase said. “You kind of want to stay in your lane a little bit and let the guy (former defensive coordinator Vance Joseph) do his job. But the dialogue you start having throughout the season with the defensive coordinator and special teams coach, it increases, once you kind of get in your rhythm. And that’s kind of happened throughout the spring, as well.”

He needs to. He's not the OC, he's the HC of the whole team. It's ok that he's calling the plays but he can't just forget about the defense. He needs to be in charge of the whole team.

Ozzy rules!!

Gase is showing something a lot of professionals in all disciplines fail to do and identify where they are falling short and how they can improve it.

The best are ones that can make adjustments, can change what they do if what they are doing is wrong. They also listen to the people around them and actively will employ those suggestions.

I do think you will see that as Gase grows, so will his role with the defense, he will never be the guy who calls the defensive game, but he will be more active in their overall game plan.

Guys, this team finally got another great coach.

Adam Gase is a goddamn phenomenal football coach.

Steve Ross you're the man.

Good news. Definitely felt he was distant from the defense last year

He's so transparent. It's refreshing. You can't give away everything, but he's pretty open and honest for an NFL head coach. Publicly admitting that he's trying a different approach after learning from last season shows his intelligence and his confidence.

While I agree it's great to have a H.C who is involved with the D, it's not an absolute necessity. Joe Gibbs is one of the greatest football coaches of all time, the only one to win 3 SB's with 3 different QB's, a feat that may never be repeated. Gibbs was extremely hands off with the defense but naturally he had a strong DC at the time, can't remember the name. Point being, it's great to be involved with the D, but as Gibbs proved sometimes just being an offensive mastermind is enough for a HC if you have the right supporting cast. Gibbs also had a legendary GM in Beathard, that doesn't hurt either.

That's what makes him such a special coach. He isn't a snobby know it all. He's admittingly learning on the job which is beautiful news to here.
He's so confident in himself, that he'll admit his faults and learn. Nothing more you can ask for from a NFL Head Coach.
I really think we found our guy after over 25 years of searching. I cannot wait to see our D with TWO real Lbers lol

Exactly. And to think, several coaches have came between Shula and Gase. A lot of incompetence and too much arrogance, like Sporano reportedly being pissed off that they tried to replace him while he was still under contract. That first pumping bum should be happy he knew Parcells, or else he would've never had an NFL head coaching job in the first place.

If the 4-3 over gets demolished this year by opponents and Gase doesn't try a different defense...he's on his way to losing seasons and possibly a pinkslip.

I doubt if it's as bad as last year because of Jones, Timmons etc., but if it happens to be, even with all these additions :ponder:

This x1000, regardless of what people think about the Pats around here, Bill Belichick is the MASTER of making adjustments - which is why that team is so damn competitive even when Tommy boy isn't playing.

Pink slip? Did you seriously write that?

Good to hear. As far as the 4-3 Over is concerned, I think we'll see a heavy move to the Nickel. This year we'll put an emphasis on the front 4, a focus on working out the long term kinks of running with a hybrid slot with a future outlook how the effects it will have on the LB prototypes. Don't see a high draft pick at LB this year; we'll target higher snap projected positions - secondary, pass rusher.
