Mike Matthews is joining the Dolphins with the hope of earning a backup center spot. (Cleveland Browns)

DAVIE — The Dolphins are committed to a starting lineup on the offensive line, but that plan’s only solid if everyone stays healthy. Depth is still a big concern, and they added a potential backup today by signing center Mike Matthews.

Matthews came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M in 2016 and signed with Cleveland, but didn’t make the regular-season roster. He landed in Pittsburgh last season, but went down in training camp with an unspecified injury.

The Dolphins have added another center to the roster.

The team announced on Friday that they have signed Mike Matthews to their 90-man roster.

Matthews went undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2016 and signed with the Browns. He didn’t make the team and moved on to the Steelers last year, but tore his patellar tendon during training camp.

Matthews is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews and the younger brother of Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews.

I've always wanted somebody from the Matthews family tree. He's a longshot though. He's behind Kilgore, Brendel and Larsen. I don't know if he has any practice squad options.

I can see him on the PS but not on the final 53 at this point. That family tho....wow

WOW......Leave no stone unturned seems to be the philosophy of this FO.

Will be a tough ask to make the 53 with Kilgore, Brendal and Larsen all capable of playing center but PS is certainly an option.

More interesting to me, given Brendel's play last year, I thought he looked pretty good - good enough to be penciled in as backup OC. And I anticipated Larsen on the 53. Looks like the staff may not see it this way.
