For once, the backup QB job of the Dolphins will be interesting, because the team has invested equal second-round picks in two young players. Chad Henne, a traditional dropback quarterback, was the 57th pick overall last year. and Pat White, who'll run the WildPat, was the 44th pick this year.
It's early to break down how it'll shake out, but let's look back and pick who the best backup quarterback the Dolphins ever had was. The top three in chronological order:

1. Earl Morrall, 1972. When Bob Griese went down in Game 5 against San Diego, defensive end Bill Stanfill went to Morrall on the sidelines. "Old Man, get those cataracts in motion, turn up your hearing aid and let's go,'' he said. The 38-year-old Morrall went undefeated (obviously) through nine games of the regular season and into the AFC Championship Game, where a healthy Griese returned. He completed 83 of 150 passes for 11 TDs, 7 interceptions and a 91 rating.

ray lucas.

well he was the best backup the jets ever had on the dolphins.

I'd have to go with Jim Jensen because he did things as a Backup QB that affected the game in a positive way.

Not saying he was ever anything special at QB but he helped us in other ways but wa still a backup QB.

scott mitchell of course nobody else comes close, oh wait maybe bernie kosar

Morrall, Mitchell, Kosar, and Don Strock.

I did like Brian Griese too...but I rank those as my top 4.

Yeah, tough to choose among those. Morrall won a Super Bowl and lead a team to one hell of a season. Mitchell wasn't the best starting QB around, but he was really too talented to be a backup ... honestly I had forgotten about him, heh. Kosar was a great player, but by the time he was a backup for us he wasn't at the height of his career .... clearly the best QB in his prime though. Strock was always my favorite backup ... very much like Mitchell a real dink and dunker. I always thought Strock would have been fantastic if the west coast offense had been around during his time. He is a lot like Pennington actually ... very accurate but without the rocket arm.

The Dolphins have really been blessed at the QB position. That's why the Fiedler years and numerous nobodys that have manned the position since Marino have really been so hard to take ... we're used to having a HOF'er like Griese or Marino leading the show, and if not, then a quality player (and I'd put Pennington in that Quality Player category).

Honestly, I'll be very happy if we don't spend any more 2nd round picks on QB's. Either balls-up and move up in the 1st to select the next great Dolphins QB, or wait until the 2nd day and look for your developmental guy.

Personally I would have to go with Morrall,Strock,Mitchell,Huard I just don't remember Kosar doing a whole lot as far as backing up Dan. Although he was the guy that gave the idea of fake spike from what I had heard.

Scott Mitchell, he came in after Dan Marino's injury and led the team to the playoffs. I thought Miami's season was over when Dan got hurt. Then we trade him to the Lions and he turns out to be a horrible starter.... or maybe it was just a horrible team!

Morrall is the best backup..
Strock was pretty talented too..

I thought this thread was asking if Henne was the best backup ever.. I was gonna say he hasn't done anything..

However, this may be the best QB trio we've ever had...
