Dolphins cornerback Bobby McCain says when big plays come along, everybody on defense needs to be celebrating in 2018, not just one or two players. (Andres Leiva / The Palm Beach Post)

Straight talk: Amid scores of Dolphins draft picks who have disappointed, McCain represents a success story.
Selected 145th overall in 2015, McCain had to survive a learning curve you’d expect of any NFL rookie corner, let alone one who wasn’t a high draft pick. There were times fans, if not the team, were frustrated.
Then 2017 came along and the flashy plays McCain had been making for some time vastly outnumbered the plays he’d like to forget. Pro Football Focus ranked him the team’s fourth-best player on defense.

I’m not going to lie, I’m not a fan of this extension. I think it’s another Kiko or Branch situation over paying for a guy with a sub par past and one semi decent year. For his career the pendulum is definitely deep on the side of head scratchers than big plays. Maybe though he’ll be like Terrell Buckley? A guy who was awful for the first 3 years that eventually developed into a fairly good corner.

I think he got a bit of a bad rap early one. Every corner gets beat but McCain's disasters seem to garner a lot of attention. I think he's put it together and we're set at slot for a while. I'm pulling for the kid.

I hope he's a future star and we got a steal. I'm already sure, with hindsight, he would be selected before pick # 145 now.

He's gotten better each year and was pretty darn good last year. I don't see it as a Kiko/Branch situation.

Based on what?

He played like a monster last year compared to his first 2 years. He seemed super aggressive and if i remember correctly wasn't he even ejected for punching Danny Amendola in the face? Roid raging

Not to mention the fact that in the slot he's always covering a quick receiver on quick throw plays. The position takes a couple yrs to adjust to at the NFL level. There are many good corners that wouldn't do well living inside.

You make it sound like he was having fits like Daz Bryant or Richie Igonoitio or something.

He's actually developed every year and played well last year. He's definitely a player who's still improving so this extension was a good one in my opinion - a much better extension than when and what they gave Reshad Jones.

I agree with the poster above - as long as Minkah is effective Reshad will be able to play in the box and play at his best while McCain and Howard should do well... if some combination of Tankersly and Lippett are able to hold down the other side, I see this entire secondary really flourishing this season... the front 7 still is going to be a huge question mark though.

I agree, we have a solid unit, barring injury. Defensive backfield is way low on my list of concerns.

The contract was a little high IMO, by that seems to be the direction the FO is now going. Resign high character, hard working, team guys. Altgough the contract may seem high in the beginning, if things work out, it is on the cheap for the later years.

Bobby McCain is the defense's Ryan Tannehill. Every year he works on things and get's better and better then takes on Leadership responsibilities as he master's the defense.
