DAVIE —
The Dolphins are continuing to experiment with personnel at left guard while Dallas Thomas has, surprisingly, remained entrenched on the right side.
Shelley Smith, who has played primarily with the second team recently, opened practice Tuesday as the first-team left guard. He replaced Daryn College, a recently signed veteran who started Friday’s preseason game.
When training camp began, the Dolphins were expected to start third-round draft pick Billy Turner at right guard. But Thomas, a third-round pick in 2013 who played just two snaps as a rookie, is spending most of the time with the first team.
“You could tell when you watched the tape throughout the course of last year that he was developing and progressing,” coach Joe Philbin said. “Obviously, fans didn’t get to see that on Sundays. But we got to watch it. We’ve watched one-on-one drills. We saw some development. Then he had a very good offseason program.”
Thomas, however, still has work to do. He played 25 snaps Friday against Atlanta but had one of the team’s worst grades, according to Pro Football Focus. He was OK in pass protection but poor in run blocking.
“I feel like there was way more I could have done,” he said.
