DAVIE —
Defensive end Dion Jordan and cornerback Jamar Taylor have something in common. The Dolphins drafted both in 2013, and both were slowed by injuries much of last season.
Now they are trying to put that behind them and take on bigger roles.
“It was more of a mental thing for me because I was hurt and I thought about it a lot,” Jordan said Monday at the team’s off-season practice. “But as the season progressed, I started getting more comfortable.”
Jordan, the No. 3 overall pick, had 26 tackles, including two sacks. A shoulder injury hindered him much of the season, but he finally feels he is back to full strength.
Jordan, 6-foot-6, has added 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason, bulking up to 265.
“It’s part of being healthy,” he said. “When I had the shoulder injury, I couldn’t do what I wanted to do in the weight room. But now I’ve had time to take care of my body.”
Taylor, a second-round pick, had hernia and groin injuries as a rookie. He played just 45 snaps.
He feels stronger now and is expected to compete with veteran Cortland Finnegan for a starting spot.
“I’m definitely more comfortable with the playbook and I’m more comfortable with myself,” Taylor said. “Just being injury free, I can fly around and just make plays. It’s definitely a big difference from year one to year two.”
Dolphins rookies played a combined 866 snaps last season, fewest in the league.
