The Miami Dolphins feel like a team on the cusp of being consistent competitors, and not just because the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets seem to be going backward.
No, this team feels like a player or three away from being a real problem for teams across the AFC. It does not feel like a team which needs an overhaul, though, which is why the Dolphins were pretty silent in free agency this offseason.
The Dolphins selectively picked their shots—though you can count the trade for Julius Thomas as one of those shots—and added talent wisely without overpaying. A move like the one for Thomas eliminated the need to chase after Martellus Bennett, and the decisions to shift Laremy Tunsil to left tackle while retaining the services of Jermon Bushrod at guard kept them from having to overspend on a tackle and guard.
That doesn’t mean all is perfect for them, but it does show the team is happy to build slow and make the right moves while not just throwing money to make a splash.
Miami has been smart. Now it just has to pay off.
