The Miami Dolphins feel like a team on the cusp of being consistent competitors, and not just because the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets seem to be going backward.
No, this team feels like a player or three away from being a real problem for teams across the AFC. It does not feel like a team which needs an overhaul, though, which is why the Dolphins were pretty silent in free agency this offseason.
The Dolphins selectively picked their shots—though you can count the trade for Julius Thomas as one of those shots—and added talent wisely without overpaying. A move like the one for Thomas eliminated the need to chase after Martellus Bennett, and the decisions to shift Laremy Tunsil to left tackle while retaining the services of Jermon Bushrod at guard kept them from having to overspend on a tackle and guard.
That doesn’t mean all is perfect for them, but it does show the team is happy to build slow and make the right moves while not just throwing money to make a splash.
Miami has been smart. Now it just has to pay off.

I'd rather of had them over spend on a guard rather than bring back Bushrod
or the other bargain basement guard...both are backup/depth guards not starters

Interesting that there was no comment about William Hayes, the DE acquired from the Rams in the article. I think he may be the very best acquisition that we made this year.

Miami Dolphins Dolphins free agency grades: Quantity/money over money/quality...there, I fixed that.

For each "impact" free agent signing this offseason...IMO, I could name a better quality player we could have signed had we been willing to pony up the dough.

Ted Larsen/Jermon Bushrod or Larry Warford/TJ Lang/Ron Leary

Lawrence Timmons or Zach Brown/AJ Klein/Sean Spence/Kevin Minter

Nate Allen or Tony Jefferson/DJ Swearinger

Fasano and Thomas or...nah, I'm cool with them as long as they can stay available.

William Hayes...I'm cool with that as well.

McDonald is interesting as well. Not sure I would have signed him considering he will miss half the season, but he's actually a really good player. Have to wonder what kind of impact he might have in the second half.

With the money Miami freed up in letting Jordan go, I wonder if they can get Brown signed. Heading into the draft that would take a major need off the table.

Is this another April Fools article?

Lol gotta be, after the Branch deal and giving Kiko top 10 guaranteed money among off the line LBs the not overpaying part was a dead giveaway.

As you elude to, money is a selling point with these guys. Jefferson has a 36 million deal over 4 years and there wasn't a chance Miami was paying that.

I agree with that. Great move!!

I agree with the article. I dont think resigning our own players to respectable deals should be lumped in with luring in outside FA players with the highest bid - which is riskier and usually more expensive.
