This makes sense now officially hearing from the coaches which maybe is why Ryan has taken some of the sacks. They want him to stay in the pocket as much as possible and learn to read defenses.I'm Ok with it and it more than likely will pay off.....Article from the Palm Beach Post

Miami Dolphins don’t want Ryan Tannehill as a ‘running quarterback’ (w/poll)

Before Week 11, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill had just two games this season with dougle-digit rushing yards.
But over the last four games Tannehill is averaging 34 rushing yards per game. Against the Steelers, Tannehill broke out for a 48-yard run on a read option — the longest run by a quarterback in team history.
Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman said Monday that the read option — which is fading in the NFL after it’s heyday a year ago — is nothing new in Miami’s offense.

If true this is stupid. I understand when you have a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady that can't run for **** but when you have a QB that runs in the 4.5s you need to use bootlegs, qb reads, etc. Now I am not saying turn into the redskins, Panthers or 49ers but run once in a while. Make them respect his running abilities. Like Rodgers.

running 1 or 2 plays a game does not make him a running qb.

if we run him like we did yesterday, he will be fine.

running qbs r rg3, vick, kapernack, wilson, etc.

I really don't think this is news and I agree with it. look at the health issues "Running" QB's have and how short of a quality carrier they have. However I do think when it comes time to extend a crucial drive they need to adjust, which is something they haven't been doing.

Redskins ruined Griffin's chances to develop by playing him the way they've played him.

It really isn't news because most of us knew it.....it was fairly obvious.

A QB needs the ability to pass to survive. Ability to run is token, and when it is a necessity for a QB to have success, they don't seem to learn the former. How much did Michael Vick and Vince Young improve since their rookie years? They never learned to read defenses because running was their crutch, and even in an offense practically tailored for his strengths, Michael Vick spent a significant percent of his drop backs tucking and running directly into a defender, not only taking but actually creating a sack. Running should be the icing on the cake, but even the year after the read option was king, you can see that passing the ball still has to be the cake which has to be made first.

It's better to have a QB who runs too little than a QB who runs too much.

Why announce this? The defense can't be sure you won't take off. Even if the intention is to hand the ball off, those read option looks are very effective in freezing and spreading out the defense, particularly near the goal line.

The announcer yesterday had it correct, that Tannehill had one opportunity near the goal line to execute the fake and take off around the end and probably score. I applaud the limited nature of those looks but 2 per game is probably safe and ideal. Tannehill is certainly conservative enough in his choices. I don't think he'll be an idiot like Robert Griffin out there, basically volunteering to get broken in half because he can't sense anything from any direction.

he's not a running qb...so don't worry about it...nfl defenses know this also and it's why when he does run every once a blue moon on a read op keeper for instance he gains massive yards...

they aren't making him a statue...they just aren't exposing a pocket qb who is damn good in the pocket into a bunch of unnecessary hits and contact...hell he has taken enough in the pocket

smart call

Good. Much rather have a pocket passer than a running QB. The steelers game was perfect. A few runs a game is cool. RG3, Kap, Wilson, and Vick will all fade or already have.

I want him to learn in the pocket, but he I like some plays where he can run too. The dolphins offense actually looked good and scored pts for once and reach over 30 first time this season. And I think some of that was from the fake handoff and run by tannehill and some where tanny made it look like he was going to throw but handed it off, etc. This seemed to help the run game, and pass game and cause miamis offense to be unpredictable for once, which is why they got big plays and scored pts

I don't think Wilson will fade. I think he's the most legit of those qbs you mentioned. Wilson does run or can run, but he's usually smarter about it than the other guys. Plus unlike the other guys who usually look to run when there's an opening, Wilson you can see many times is looking down field and runs to buy time and runs only when nobody is open. You see that with Andrew luck too. Luck will get big runs too, but he's usually try to buy time and find a WR open downfield, but does it when needed. Wilson scrambles more to, to get spaciing, as he's only 5'10, so some space is important for him when looking over the gigantic lineman in front of him. So his improvisng is more out of necessity too and the fact he can from his instincts and athelticism and nimble feet.

Agreed. Out of the ones mentioned Wilson may turn out to be legit. The others I doubt. I think Luck, Tannehill, and Wilson will be better. To early to tell with Foles.
