Mobile, Ala. — As Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry was preparing for the Pro Bowl in Orlando on Wednesday afternoon, team management at the Senior Bowl was saying talks for a discussion have yet to begun.

This is not cause for alarm. Yet.

The Dolphins want Landry in the fold for the long-term. They recognize his value to the team. They understand what he means to his teammates and to the fan base, which adores him.

What some agents at the Senior Bowl were predicting about the pending Landry negotiation was interesting.

Complicated. Delicate. Perhaps difficult.

Because of how Landry likely perceives himself — in the same stratosphere as Pro Bowlers A.J. Green ($15 million/year), Julio Jones ($14.2 million), Dez Bryant ($14 million), and Demaryius Thomas ($14 million).

The club may view a fair deal for Landry more in the range of Pro Bowler Doug Baldwin ($11.5 million).

The web site spotrac.com calculates Landry’s market value at $12.5 million/year, suggesting fairly comparable players as Baldwin, T.Y. Hilton ($13 million), Keenan Allen ($11.25 million) and Marvin Jones ($8 million).

Perhaps $12 million a year will be the eventual landing spot on a deal both player and club would like done.

As for why discussions with Landry’s representative have not yet occurred, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday: “Again, just making sure we evaluate our roster right and then we’ll worry about the guys right now with the immediate free agents and then we’ll start working towards the guys that are still under contract.”

Miami is going to work to secure deals for unrestricted free agent wide receiver Kenny Stills and defensive end Andre Branch first. Both players were key contributors in 2016, but there is a delicate balance.

Recognizing the importance of keeping your own. But not over-extending to do so.

“We want to keep our own,” Dolphins executive Mike Tannenbaum said. “We’re never going to bat 1,000. The system just is not set up for it. We’ve been able to extend some players before I started – some like Mike Pouncey or Ryan Tannehill we were able to do – but candidly, you can’t keep them all. We understand that and acknowledge that. We’ve studied it hard and we try to come up with offers that are fair, but knowing that – as Chris (Grier) just said – these guys earned the right (to be free agents) and some are going to do extremely well in free agency and we totally understand that…”

Recently on Instagram, Landry created a post that included the phrase “I feed my family with this don’t play with my money this year I’m serious..”

I think this gets done unless his representation is insane. Miami is willing to pay him.

It's a good question. How does Jarvis view himself? He's not A.J. Green or Julio Jones but I think he's there with Baldwin and Hilton. $12 - $12.5 million/year seems about right to me.

He shouldnt get a penny over ty hilton

Keep in mind, this would be an extension of a rookie deal.

So while the new money could be in that 4 year/50 million dollar realm . . . it would also include a 5th year at only a million.

So maybe Miami just does 4 years/50 million extension. Keep the 2017 the same, but Jarvis gets a signing bonus of say 12.5 million and 2017-2019 is fully guaranteed.

So from 2017 to 2021 . . . Jarvis makes 5 years/50,893,850 . . . . Signing Bonus hits of 2.5 million throughout the life of the deal.

2017 his cap hit would only be 3.6 million (signing bonus hit from rookie deal and new deal plus base salary).

2018 to 2021 it would be 4 years and 37.5 million of salary. We could inflate the last year of the deal and rework it or cut him if for some reason he just falls off.

2018 Base - 8.5 million
2019 Base - 8.5 million
2020 Base - 9.5 million
2021 Base - 11 million

Add 2.5 million to each year for Salary cap bonus hits and that would give you his cap number each year.

We could also increase his 2017 salary to make those number lower as well. Lots of options but Don't expect a rip up off the 2017 year . . . expect a extension that resembles Doug Baldwin but for Miami to benefit from the 4th year of the rookie deal.

I'm not much of a fan of $12.5 mil per for slow slot but I guess this is one of those times where an exception is warranted

doesnt seem like much of a discount coming to him a year early

It's one you bite the bullet on and one you do not risk going into 2018 without having in place.

It's not like Jarivs is going to fall off the map in 2018 . . . he's likely to put up another 90+ catch season . . . 6 or 7 touchdowns . . . 1000+ yards . . . show fire and leadership and be off to a team for a similar amount or more. Him and Ryan have a chemistry that needs to be maintained.

I just look at it as we had him on a 3 year rookie deal at under a million each year . . . . and the next 5 years will be 5 years/50 million. Not bad at all . . . . you end up having an 8 year/53.6 million dollar contract over Landry's first 8 seasons.

The discount is keeping the base around the same as the rookie deal . . . .and allowing Jarvis to "feed his family" off the signing bonus . . . which will likely be quadruple what he has made over his first 3 years.

Miami still keeps a small number on him in 2017.

you do this and and you pay stills even $7.5 mil you got $20 mil in 2 wrs...I'm sorry but if I'm gonna do that I need Julio jones level impact

not ideal #2 and #3 one

get landry done no doubt...but stills at that $8 mil or more # ehhhhhhhhhh

Kenny is an obvious walk with what we invested in Carroo.

I know people do not want to hear that but the decision ultimately comes down to extending Kenny and letting Jarvis walk in 2018 or extending Jarvis and letting Kenny walk.

Nobody wants to think about the 2019 season when you are paying over 30 million in base salary to 3 wide receivers and still need to think about a long term deal on Parker.

And I get Parker hasn't "exploded" yet, but his potential "to explode" outweighs anything from a production standpoint that Jarvis and Kenny has given us.

Need to fix this defense and start worrying about this offensive line which could turn into a train wreck in 2017 if the cards fall down. Even Kenny at 8 million a year, which I think is extremely on the low end on what he will end up with, is not great for this team.

Kenny won't be worth what he's being paid but who else is around that can sprint down the field and attack a deep ball like he does?

I wouldn't use the term "attack" . . . but he's done a good job getting seperation down field and lets face it . . . both quarterbacks really did well on throws in his direction. Where Kenny did improve was on adjusting on the fly, especially with Matt Moore. Parker is a guy that has shown he can attack the football down the field and make himself a "bigger target" for the QB.

But he's a big product of what Adam Gase is trying to do on offense and when teams double Parker and Landry, he gets more opportunities. I think people are under the assumption that a guy like Carroo . . . or whoever . . . can't also be productive with Adam Gase putting them in those spots.

It's not that people shouldn't want Stills back, its about paying that much for a wide receiver group when the defense is a dumpster fire void of young talent and speed and the offensive line needs continous work.

Not to mention you get Carroo in as the #3 and then invest in a major seam threat at TE . . . . that can elevate the offense even more.

I can't in good conscious be satisfied with resiging Stills with what I saw last year on defense. Kenny Stills or Melvin Ingram?

Miami has to trust their drafting ability.

If you pay Jarvis and Stills big money contracts to the tune of $20M annually for a #2 and #3 WR , what do you pay for a legit #1 and can you afford it?

What if Devante Parker becomes that number 1, will you be able to keep him paying on top of Landry and Stills?
