CAMP BATTLES
Linebacker, defensive end — Jason Trusnik can play most anywhere in the front seven.
But after a recent practice, he tried his hand at something altogether different. Trusnik, the reserve utility man from Division III’s Ohio Northern, spent the better part of five minutes trying his hand at long snapper.
“Since I’ve been in the league, something I’ve prided myself on is knowing the whole defense and all the special teams, so wherever I’m called up, that’s where I’ll do the job,” Trusnik said.

I would prefer a guy that can contribute at other positions long snap. Honestly tho I dont recall too many issues with snaps on special teams in years...good job Denny.

Denney isn't going anywhere....he's one of the best in the league. Every team has a specialist like Denney. It's too important not to. I think Trusnik is doing this for 2 reasons....learning things seems to be fun/important to him and he adds insurance in case Denney gets hurt in a game, be it on coverage or blocking. It just adds even more value to keeping Trusnik on the roster.

Jason Taylor was the backup LS for years so the position is open; somebody has to do it. I don't remember who our guy was when JT was gone those two years.

Hell i hope trunsik excels at it. Never understand why people that longsnap are basically useless elsewhere.

Because longsnapping consistently well isn't easy. Coaches get a little un-nerved when balls start flying over the punters or holders head. If it was easy enough other guys on the roster could pick it up there wouldn't be specialists taking up a roster spot on every team in the NFL.

Never said it was easy I have actually long snapped but at most levels people that longsnap are useful players. I think many players just dont want to do it, i personally think that many college players hurt thier nfl chances by not trying to become a longsnapper.

I agree with you. It's something a marginal LB or TE could tack on their resume, but in most cases their is probably still going to be a gap in execution between them and the best LS that get the job.

maybe but i truly think longsnapping is something that you can really make yourself good at, you just have to put in extra work.
