On his second play during Saturday’s preseason game, Dolphins quarterback
Chad Henne stepped up to the line of scrimmage and saw a Tampa Bay Buccaneers
team prepared to defend the running play originally called in the huddle just a
few seconds before.
The Bucs’ defense had only one safety deep, called “post safety” coverage,
and Henne knew the offense would be better suited to exploit that part of the
field.
“So I audible to a post-safety [passing] play, right?” Henne explained
privately afterward. “Then, the defense audibled into two-deep [coverage]. So
now I’m back into the same situation. But you try to pick a play that can beat
any coverage.”
You might not understand exactly what Henne means by all of this, and that’s
OK. It isn’t what is important here.
