Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey didn’t come out of retirement to lose

Gailey was a bit of a stranger to most of the Dolphins coaches who returned from last year’s staff, like defensive coordinator Josh Boyer. They faced each other plenty of times over the years, but never really crossed paths before Gailey joined the Dolphins.

“I’ve always kind of respected him from afar,” Boyer said. “Getting to meet him in person is awesome. We’ve had some really good conversations about football. He’s a great football coach. More important, he’s a really good man

“You’re in the business because you like to win,” Gailey said. “Everybody says they want to compete. ... No, you want to win. If you don’t compete, you won’t win. But I love winning. It may be winning a series. It may be winning a half. Ultimately you’re about winning a game.

I am sure Gailey or any coach never took a job to lose. In all those NFL jobs that Gailey took I am pretty sure he did not take them to lose.
I am also sure he did not take the Ga Tech job to go 7-5 every season.

That being said he hasnt led a top offense in over two decades so color me very damn unexcited about him being our OC.
We hired a guy that no team was knocking down the door to hire that had a fairly shaky resume offense wise since the turn of the century

Chan did plenty of losing before he entered retirement. So there is that. Tua is a QB of the new mold, so what does Flores do? Gives him an OC of the old. With the abundance of young, innovative minds on offense at the college and pro levels the hiring of Gailey was nonsensical. A lot of potential hires would of done cartwheels to work with a guy with Tua's potential and skill set.

Who do you think was innovative with the RPO before the Eagles made it cool?

Chan is old, but he is not old school in designs.

Chan's best years as an OC were 97/98. His last 9 years as an OC his team's ranked 16, 26, 24, 25, 14, 19, 10, 26 in total offense. And he hasn't coached in 5 years. Gailey's early contributions to the RPO have no more currency in today's game than Hal Mumme's contributions to the Air Raid do.

Based on that I am certainly worried as well. Hopefully again, Flores knows what he’s doing

I am going to hope for the best but I agree with this and have thought this since his hiring. At the time though I thought it would be because we would lose out on Tua and be rolling with Fitz and Rosen and so I assumed we were dead in the water for the future anyway. Tua gives us hope but I also agree with this line of thinking. Chan was considered "innovative" and one of the people who brought the RPO to the NFL...but the game has changed so much just in 10 years. How did we not choose to go forward with the league?

I do too but lets not forget he went through an OC and DC in year one and people thought he had some genius plan for another coordinator to become oc and he left
