Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross says he paid $1.1 billion for South Florida's favorite sports franchise to win championships, not to make money.
Addressing the media Friday before the team's first practice of training camp, Ross made it clear he is as impatient as every other fan for the team to improve on back-to-back 7-9 seasons. Acknowledging the pressure outside and within the organization, he hinted that Tony Sparano must produce a winning record to remain the coach despite receiving a contract extension in the offseason.
"The players like him. He's a great motivator. You know certainly there's pressure on him as everybody's put on him; you know, he's got to win this season," Ross said. "But I believe in him in the long term and I think he's great.
"When you're a football coach, there's always pressure. … Does it necessarily have to come from me? No. He can feel it by everybody."
