The Miami Dolphins are going to be very careful, indeed, they are going to take precautions with the return of defensive end Cameron Wake from a ruptured Achilles.

And if that means Wake isn't the starter and taking all the repetitions in practice the first day of training camp, so be it. And if that means Wake isn't the starter and taking 40-50 snaps at the start of the regular season, so be it.

Indeed, the Dolphins are planning for those exact scenario, per people familiar with the team's thinking.

Wake, 34, may not be ready for a full load early in the 2016 season, the team believes. And even once he is fully 100 percent, he will not be asked to be a full time player anymore.

That is why defensive end Andre Branch, an under-the-radar acquisition on a one-year deal, is considered the starter initially until Wake is fully healthy. At least that is what the team told Branch when he asked about his role.

“A very prominent role," Branch told reporters on a telephone conference call Friday. "Basically, (I’ll) be opposite of Mario Williams and then on rush downs, when Cam Wake gets back, it will be me, Cam (Wake), (Ndamukong) Suh and Mario (Williams). Those guys have been playing at a high level their whole career and I’m ready to learn from those guys.”

Those guys haven't been together very long at all. Wake and Suh played only seven games together before Wake ruptured his Achilles in October 2015. Williams and Branch -- who may get more reps at defensive end than anyone else until Wake is ready -- just joined the team days ago.So the Dolphins defensive line will look different in 2016 after losing Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby.

Indeed, Branch is supposed to play the Shelby role. But, again, Wake's health might thrust him toward more snaps than Wake. And now you can understand why the Dolphins wanted to restructure Wake's contract last month. He is scheduled to cost the team $9.8 million against the cap. That is a fair figure for a full-time 45-50 snap defensive end who is an accomplished pass rusher. But Wake might get perhaps half that many snaps -- at least early in the season. And most of those might come in passing situations.

That makes him a very expensive part-time player. The Dolphins solution was either push Wake to continue playing his traditional role as a full-time player or trim his cap number, and likely his salary. The negotiations to cut the cap number didn't succeed. The team doesn't intend to force Wake to play more snaps because it doesn't want to risk another injury or a re-injury. The Dolphins also don't want Wake wearing down before the end of the season.

And so right now Wake is a part-time player getting paid like what he used to be -- a fulltime defensive end who is among the NFL's better pass rushers.

i like the idea, but would have been more comfortable with it had they kept Shelby instead.

Just imagine the biggest stretch at 13 and that is who we will pick regardless of need. Punter perhaps?

Sometimes as hard as it is you just need to move on. The good franchises know how to do this. It's the tough decision. Cutting an aging player making 8M and coming off a significant injury in October and 34 years old.

Miami continues its pattern of not making the right decisions and these decisions one by one are the reason they simply cannot get it together.

The guys been a loyal soldier for the team for years and has never been a disruption. He's never had a crazy cap number and if I'm not mistaken had restructured in the past to help the team clear up cap space. If he's making a couple million more than he should be this year(and judging by recent signings this offseason, I'm not sure he wouldn't get a deal very close to what he is making now anyway), I can live with that.

Probably should just go ahead and cut him at the price we're paying. I don't see us playing for much late in the season so all this limiting him will be for naught.

Is branch big enough to rush from inside at 265? My guess would be wake and williams on the edge with suh and branch inside. Assuming he can be effective on the inside with those 4 and i wont get my hopes up with dion jordan and kiko but if somehow, some way they play and are even at 80% of their potential, that could be a scary front on third downs. If not jenkins and hopefully the coaches can fix mccain and coach him up after seeing so much potential 2 years ago then shipping him to the bench.

I hate the fact that branch is gonna start and have a significant sub role but it is what it is...they definitely got to try and save wake for the sub...provided we can get teams into our sub

To repeat what others have said: Should have kept Shelby instead of signing Branch.

I agree...for what they are asking role wise shelby fit

I think that was more about lockerroom and maybe off the field character or something...maybe part of it was he was friends with miko i believe

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression Shelby had no interest in re-signing with us?

I watched 10-15 minutes of video from last year. Branch's pass rush was not very effective, but he set the edge better than anyone did last year for the Phins. Shelby and OV frequently went inside which made seal blocks ludicrously easy for the opposing offensive line. I have some hope the DEs will help with the rush defense this year.

That was my read also from based what was on twitter etc.. again we have to keep in mind players may have wanted to move on- its not just as simple as- we should have kept the player...

Plus Shelby got 4 years 18 million, with 5 million up front and 7.5 guaranteed. Branch got a 1 year 3 million dollar deal. I'll take branch, thanks.
